Telstra’s Lunar New Year deal: save $480 on the iPhone XR

Lunar New Year is less than a week away, but the celebrations have already started at Telstra. The massive Aussie telco is ringing in China’s Year of the Pig with a limited-time online offer for iPhone fans: a saving of $480 on the iPhone XR in good-luck red.

From now through to 5 February, 2019, you can pick up the (PRODUCT) RED edition of the 128GB iPhone XR on Telstra’s Medium postpaid plan from just $88 per month. If you opt to lease out the device over 24 months, you’ll pay $88 monthly ($79 for your plan, and $9 per month for your iPhone); if you decide to buy your phone over a two-year contract, you’ll pay $98 each month for your plan and device.

$20 monthly discount on buy and lease plans

This deal gives customers a $20 monthly discount on the price of their iPhone, regardless of whether you lease or buy the handset. So over a 24-month plan, you’ll save $480 in total. Customers should, however, be aware of the difference between buying and leasing: a lease plan will save you $10 per month, but means you won’t technically own your iPhone after your two-year plan expires.

Instead, you’re basically renting your phone for a 24-month period. Once that rental period is up, you’ll need to return it to Telstra, or opt to buy it for a nominal ‘fair market’ price. If you do decide to hand it back, you’ll have nothing more left to pay if the phone is undamaged; however, if your leased iPhone isn’t still in good working order, you’ll need to pay a fee of at least $229.

If you do go for a lease plan, you also have the option of upgrading to a new iPhone at the 12 and 18-month marks. You’ll need to pay a $99 upgrade fee to swap to a new device at 12 months, or wait until 18 months and upgrade for free.

How does this deal compare?

Over at Optus, you can take save 15% on the super-sized 200GB iPhone plans over 24 months. Available with the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max, the two-year plan is normally priced at $125 per month, but is currently discounted to $106.25 (not including any device payments). This equals a total two-year saving of $450, and the plan itself includes plenty of features: 200GB of data each month, unlimited standard national and international talk and text, and 4GB of monthly overseas data roaming.

Optus’ plans also include unlimited data-free music streaming from Spotify, Google Play Music and iHeartRADIO, plus unlimited access to Optus Sport and the National Geographic app. You’ll also get data-free mobile TV streaming from Netflix, Stan and ABC iView when you sign up online, and – like Telstra – you can choose whether to buy your device on a regular two-year contract, or save $10 per month by leasing.

If you are interested in Optus’ 15% plan discount, its available to new and re-contracting customers from now until February 3, 2019. So if ‘new year, new iPhone’ is your Year of the Pig plan, you’ll need to move quickly – both Telstra and Optus’ iPhone offers expire next week.
