Have you ever felt nervous driving a new car – yours, or maybe a friend’s? This kind of anxiety is felt by 44% of the respondents to our recent survey when they drive a rental car. When we asked younger drivers, the percentage increased to 64%. In 2009, IBIS reported that 140,000 rental cars were on the road at any given time.
That’s a lot of nervous drivers on our roads. Additionally, 50% of respondents admit they cannot drive in a foreign city without a GPS.
These are just some of the facts we uncovered when we surveyed hundreds of car rental customers about their experiences, and responses started to vary even more when we asked drivers of different genders. For one, a greater proportion of women felt anxiety when behind the wheel of a hire car, especially when compared to men (53% versus 38%). Women are also more likely than men to take more care when driving one of these vehicles (47% v 35%).
However, more men than women have crashed or dented a hire car (22% v 14%).
We also asked drivers of different ages how they treated their vehicles during the hire. This is how they responded:
|Things done in hire cars that drivers wouldn’t do in their own.||Generation Y drivers||Generation X drivers||Baby Boomers drivers|
|Smoke or allow people to smoke in the hire car.||21%||13%||5%|
|Eat messy or sticky feed.||26%||13%||6%|
|Allow people in the car who are wet, muddy, sandy, or dirty.||24%||19%||6%|
More than two thirds of all our respondents feel similarly indifferent to their car’s condition, admitting they only fill up their rental car with the cheapest fuel available.
