Households could soon access internet speeds up to 5x their current rate thanks to upgrades to the national broadband network (NBN), but they will need to check their provider is passing the upgrades on.
From 14 September, NBN Co will significantly accelerate select wholesale products, increasing maximum speeds by at least twice their current rate, while also introducing a new tier that is double the current fastest offer.
Research from Canstar Blue shows 55% of providers on its database have already announced they will pass on the increased speeds to their customers, all at no additional cost.

Who is eligible for the speed increase and when will they receive it?
The upgrades will only be available for those with Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) connections, on a product with a maximum download speed of 100Mbps or faster. According to the most recent ACCC NBN report, that includes more than 2.1 million customers.
While providers such as Aussie Broadband and Swoop have confirmed the new speeds will be available from 15 September, other retailers, such as Dodo and iPrimus have told customers the upgraded speeds will not be available until October.
However, even with the right connection type and retailer, households with older modems may not receive access to the higher speeds.
Routers with a minimum WiFi standard of WiFi 6 are recommended, while older devices, including laptops and TVs, may also not be able to handle the high-speed connections.
What can households do to get access to the higher speeds?
Upgrading the NBN connection to a premises is the key step in accessing the new speeds. For thousands of households, that could be as simple as checking their address on the NBN Co website to see if they’re eligible for the Full Fibre Program, which allows eligible homes to upgrade their connection type to FTTP.
For those with the right connection but a plan that is currently not eligible for the upgrades, moving to a new plan, with the minimum requirement of 100Mbps in download speed, will be the ticket to faster internet. The Canstar Blue database shows there are currently four plans offering the minimum required speed for $90 or less a month.
Some providers will also include the option to purchase a new modem as part of a new plan. Modems may be offered for a one-off upfront cost, or for ‘free’ provided you stay on the plan for a minimum period.

Canstar Blue utilities editor, Tara Donnelly, says, “The internet helps keep so many Australians connected, communicating and working together, so it’s great to see an upgrade to our national infrastructure to help make it faster and more reliable.”
“Almost overnight, eligible households will get a boost to their internet access that will be, at a minimum, double the speed they’re accessing now, and at a maximum, five times more than that.
“It’s up to the retailers to choose how they pass those speeds on, and while it’s great to see there are no additional costs or fees being added to the new services yet, customers should – as always – keep an eye on their bills to make sure it stays that way.
“Anyone hoping to take advantage of the new speed tiers should check they’ve got the right connection first, and if not, see if they’re eligible for the free upgrade.
“Whether a household is eligible for the new speeds or not, this is a great reminder to review and potentially switch internet plans.
“While bills might be something we try to ignore, taking the time to see what you’re paying for, comparing options for something similar, and possibly switching, could save you in the long run.”
