Roast Chicken Dinner

Peck and peck! Woolies’ and Coles’ new Southern BBQ-inspired roast chooks

Can’t be bothered doing your own Sunday roast? Coles and Woolworths have stepped up their hot roast chicken game with new flavours that look sure to keep even the pickiest diners happy with a store-bought chook.

The two supermarkets have gone head to head with takes on tastes from the southern US states. Woolworths has opted for a seasonal special ‘Memphis BBQ’ roast chicken, while Coles has unveiled a ‘Southern Style’ flavour.

“The plot chickens! We’re excited about our new seasonal Memphis BBQ hot roast chicken”, a Woolworths spokesperson said about last week’s new release. “It’s available now at most Woolworths stores across Australia.”

The price of Woolworths’ latest hatchling is expected to be similar to existing roast chook flavours, with photos taken by online shoppers showing the price for one roast chook at $13, pricing it slightly above the traditional roast chooks currently on sale in store.

Meanwhile, Coles’ Southern Style chickens, also priced at $13, and slightly more expensive than the current range of roast chickens, have been available in every state and territory except the Northern Territory since May 10. This new flavour comes after Coles unveiled a Honey BBQ roast chicken earlier in 2022 and a limited-edition Vegemite BBQ chook in November.

“Following the success of the Honey BBQ Hot Roast Chicken launched last year, we discovered our customers are looking for tasty and flavour-packed alternatives to the humble roast chook,” said Coles Product Developer for Seafood & Deli, Tim Hickox.

“We also know that when our customers are time poor, our range of convenience meals are great take-home options that don’t compromise on flavour.”

While the new flavours elevate Coles’ and Woolworths’ hot roast chicken offerings, the supermarkets were beaten by Costco in Canstar Blue’s most recent Supermarket Hot Roast Chicken ratings, meaning it’s worth sampling a few chooks to see what’s a winner at the dinner table (a big ask, we know).
