How we rate toilet paper

Our review compares toilet paper on customer satisfaction, so you can find out what other Aussies think about the compared brands before you go ahead with a purchase. Think of it as like asking hundreds of your closest mates which toilet paper they think is best!

Canstar Blue surveyed 2,625 Australians for their feedback on the toilet paper(s) they’ve purchased and used in the last month.

  • The outcomes reported in these ratings are measured via accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics.

Respondents rate their satisfaction with their toilet paper brand(s) from zero to ten, where zero is extremely dissatisfied and ten is extremely satisfied. Brand satisfaction was rated by respondents on the following criteria:
  • Overall satisfaction: measures consumer satisfaction with a toilet paper brand as an individual score NOT a combined total of all criteria.
  • Softness & feel: the toilet paper felt soft on the skin and caused no discomfort (i.e. rash or skin abrasions).
  • Effectiveness: the toilet paper had good absorption and durability (i.e. could be used without tearing or falling apart).
  • Value for money: the cost is reasonable for the quality and quantity of the toilet paper.
  • Packaging convenience: the toilet paper packaging was easy to open, dispense and store as needed.

The winning brand is the one that receives the highest Overall satisfaction rating once all the scores from the Overall satisfaction criteria are combined and averaged.

  • Overall satisfaction is asked as a specific question and represents an individual measure, not a combined total of all criteria.
  • When we cannot determine a clear winner from the criteria for the Overall satisfaction rating, we will then look at the other criteria measured in the rating.
    • The brand with the highest number of five-star ratings within the supporting criteria will become the five-star recipient in overall satisfaction, and thus win the award. If a clear leader still cannot be determined from the supporting criteria, joint winners will be declared.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included, so not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The brands rated in this survey are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.

  • Who Gives a Crap
  • Quilton
  • ALDI
  • icare
  • Kleenex

Aussies’ toilet habits revealed

To conclude our review, here are some light-hearted outcomes of our survey which offer an insight into how Aussies use toilet paper and what is considered proper toilet etiquette.

Scrunchers vs folders

The age-old debate – should you scrunch up your toilet paper or fold it up before wiping? Scrunchers argue that their method gives a better grip and keeps your hand further away from the ‘danger zone’, while proponents of folding claim that they are more efficient and can cover more ground… Both sides have good arguments, but which way is best? According to our survey, the answer is clear – fold it. Most Aussies (57%) said they fold their toilet paper, while 18% scrunch and 22% opt for a combination of scrunch and fold.

Roll over or under?

Should toilet paper roll over or roll under

Another toilet paper debate – and one that can cause some ‘serious tension’ in households – is toilet paper roll orientation. When you put a new roll on the holder, do you position it so that it rolls over the top, or underneath from the bottom? We found that most Australians roll toilet paper over the top (64%), while a good chunk of respondents don’t have a preference (20%). Only 13% of people are dedicated under side rollers.
