How we rate digital cameras

Our ratings compare a range of digital camera brands based on customer satisfaction, so you can find out what other Aussies think about their digital camera before you shop around. It’s like asking for recommendations from other Aussies, but all in one place!

Canstar Blue surveyed 653 Australians for their feedback on the digital camera(s) they’ve purchased in the last three years.

  • The outcomes reported in these ratings are measured via Pureprofile’s accredited online research panel.

Survey respondents are asked to rate their satisfaction with their digital camera brand from zero to 10, with zero meaning extremely dissatisfied and 10 meaning extremely satisfied. Digital camera brand satisfaction is rated on the following criteria:

  • Overall satisfaction: measures consumer satisfaction with a digital camera brand as an individual score, NOT the combined total of all criteria.
  • Memory/storage capacity: the camera was able to store a large number of photos/videos with internal storage and/or expandable storage.
  • Value for money: the price paid was reasonable compared to the quality of the digital camera.
  • User friendliness: the digital camera was easy to set up and operate.
  • Video quality: photos and/or videos taken on the camera were of good quality.
  • Design: the digital camera was functional and easy to use, looked good and was convenient to transport.

The winning brand is the one that receives the highest Overall satisfaction rating once all the scores from the Overall satisfaction criteria are combined and averaged.

  • Overall satisfaction is asked as a specific question and represents an individual measure, not a combined total of all criteria.
  • When we cannot determine a clear winner from the criteria for the Overall satisfaction rating, we will then look at the other criteria measured in the rating.
    • The brand with the highest number of five-star ratings within the supporting criteria will become the five-star recipient in overall satisfaction, and thus win the award. If a clear leader still cannot be determined from the supporting criteria, joint winners will be declared.

To qualify in the ratings results, brands must have received a minimum of 30 responses to be included. Therefore, not all digital camera brands in the market will be compared in this survey. Brands rated in this survey are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.

  • Sony
  • Panasonic
  • Nikon
  • Canon
  • Kodak

Top Digital Camera Brand — Sony

Sony was our winner for best digital cameras, with five stars scored across almost all categories including overall satisfaction, memory/storage capacity, value for money, video quality and design, while it scored four stars for user friendliness.

Panasonic took out second place, scoring four stars for overall satisfaction, followed by Nikon and Canon respectively, which also scored four stars for overall satisfaction. While Kodak, which rounded out our ratings, scored three stars for overall satisfaction, it was the only brand to score five stars for user friendliness.

While these are only some of the digital camera brands on the market, there are plenty of other brands to choose from, offering a range of features at different price points. Comparing a wide range of camera brands might help you choose the best digital camera for your needs.

The vast majority of respondents had researched camera brands before purchasing, whether that was online or in store, while 15% wished they had purchased a better camera. The average price paid for a digital camera was around $727, and while 37% had purchased their camera on sale, 10% chose to purchase the cheapest digital camera available.
