One in ten who have had phone bill hikes can’t be bothered to switch

The Canstar Blue survey has revealed almost half (48%) of those on postpaid plans have had an increase to their bills in the last year – yet a staggering 89% admit they haven’t done anything about it.

Of those, 10% say they know they could change to a cheaper plan and make significant savings, but could ‘not be bothered’ to switch.

Mobile phone bills impacted by increased cost of living

For one-quarter of Australians on a postpaid or phone on a plan service, the increased cost of living has had an impact on how they keep up with their mobile payments, with the survey also revealing:

  • 42% admit they’ve struggled to keep up with their phone bills
  • 24% have downgraded their plan to one with less data
  • 16% have missed their bill payments
  • 6% have reached out to the provider for financial hardship assistance

Switching to a different provider can be done in minutes and potentially save hundreds

For those on SIM-only plans, switching providers or ‘porting’ could take just ten minutes, all while keeping your original phone number.

Research from CanstarBlue.com.au shows moving from the average to lowest cost plan on the same network could save up to $17 a month, which adds up to over $200 a year.

For any potential switchers worried about network coverage, the recent agreement between TPG (owner of Vodafone) and Optus has seen the coverage for any TPG brands increase to 98.8% of the population.

Aussies should consider switching for a better fit

Canstar Blue’s utilities editor, Tara Donnelly, says, “Receiving a top rating for customer satisfaction from thousands of Australians is no small feat, so a big congratulations to this year’s Most Satisfied Customer awards for mobile plans.”

“Considering the role mobile phones play in our daily lives, ensuring we’re getting the best deal out of the plan we’re on should be just as important – but our research shows that for some, that’s unfortunately not the case.

“The ability to switch plans can be a very simple process that gets you from start to finish within a matter of hours, without having to lose your phone number. At a potential saving of hundreds of dollars, that could be well worth your time.

“If you’re on a SIM-only plan, take a few minutes to look at how much you’re paying, and importantly, how much data you’re using. For many, you’ll find what you think you ‘need’ in data is very different to what you actually use, and switching to a plan that’s a better fit could cost a lot less.

“Network coverage woes are also fast becoming a thing of the past, thanks to the network-sharing agreement between TPG and Optus. Getting a good deal on a mobile plan now doesn’t have to come with concerns you could be missing out on strong coverage and fast data.”
