Understanding electricity in QLD

When talking about electricity in Queensland, it’s best to break things up by region. Queensland has two distribution networks that run and maintain power supply in the state. They are:

  • Energex: Covering most of south-east Queensland, including Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Logan, Ipswich, Redlands and Moreton Bay.
  • Ergon Energy: Servicing all households north of Gympie or west of Gatton.

In the Energex region (south-east Queensland), the electricity market is deregulated, meaning there’s pricing competition in the state and households are free to choose their energy provider from more than 30 options. In contrast, households on the Ergon network (those who live outside of south-east Queensland) have electricity pricing regulated by the Queensland Competition Authority and don’t get to choose their power company.

FAQs about QLD Electricity Plans

It’s fair to say that the likes of GloBird Energy and Nectr are consistently at the top of the tables for cheap prices.

However, it’s worth noting that this list is constantly changing thanks to power providers regularly shaking up their offerings. The cheapest electricity provider one day may not be so price competitive next month, so it’s important to regularly compare your rates to ensure you’re on the best deal possible.

Generally, a good usage rate in SEQ is 24-26¢/kWh, with a reasonable supply charge sitting at about 110-111¢/day. In regional QLD, the QCA has determined a fixed rate for residential energy in 2022-23 as 90.408¢/kWh and 22.135¢/day on tariff 11.

But ultimately, the best rates will be those suited to needs of your household. If you are a lower usage household, you may benefit from cheaper supply charges. But, if you are in a high-usage household, it may be worth looking for the cheapest usage rates.

QLD Electricity Rebates

Financially vulnerable households in Queensland have options for support in paying their electricity bills. Here is a list of concessions provided by the state government to Queenslanders.

  • QLD Electricity Rebate: A payment of $340.85 per year towards electricity bills for seniors, pensioners, veterans and asylum seekers.
  • Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme: A payment of up to $720 every two years to households experiencing an emergency or short-term financial crisis.
  • Electricity Life Support Concession: Households with a home-based oxygen concentrator or kidney dialysis machine receive $57.85 per month for each oxygen concentrator or $38.74 per month for a kidney dialysis machine.
  • Medical Cooling and Heating Electricity Concession Scheme: $340.85 annual concession for health care card owners suffering from a medical condition causing difficulty regulating body temperature.

One of the most confusing terms in energy is tariffs. Tariffs describe the method by which your electricity company charges you. In Queensland, several electricity tariffs are available, including:

  • Single rate: Electricity rates are the same regardless of the time of day.
  • Time of use: Different rates depending on when you use electricity — peak, off-peak, and shoulder periods.
  • Demand: Lower supply and usage charges with an extra ‘demand charge’ in peak usage periods.
  • Controlled load: One or more appliances, such as your hot water system, are metered separately to the rest of the house.
  • Supply economy: Electricity is available for 18 hours a day.
  • Smart control: A new controlled load tariff with restricted operating hours.
