Alinta Energy Review and Rates

Alinta Energy, owned by Hong Kong’s Chow Tai Fook Enterprises, claims to be the only ‘true’ national electricity and natural gas company, with operations in five of the six Australian states. It holds generation assets nationwide and currently retails electricity in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. It also sells natural gas in South Australia, New South Wales, Western Australia and Victoria.

Alinta Energy says it likes to ‘keep things simple’ by using its wealth of market knowledge and power to offer customers deals on energy that are straightforward and transparent. Alinta Energy isn’t into gimmicks, instead keeping it simple with just the one market offer on electricity. But while Alinta electricity is understandable, is it affordable? In this article, Canstar Blue takes a close look Alinta Energy, including what’s on offer and what it might cost you.

Compare Electricity Plans

Alinta Energy plans

Alinta Energy only has one market electricity offer in NSW, QLD and SA, with two in Victoria, in addition to its standing offer. Alinta’s flagship product in most areas is called the ‘Fair Deal’, while in Queensland it has the ‘Home SaverPlus’ plan. Alinta’s Fair Deal offers come with generous pay on time discounts that vary across the states. The benefit period of this contract is two years, however there is no lock in contract or exit fees for leaving early.

NSW Fair Deal 27 27%
VIC Fair Deal 43 43%

Alinta Electricity Rates

Alinta Energy’s Fair Deal electricity contracts include pretty large discounts compared to the market, but bigger isn’t always better when it comes to finding the best deal on electricity. So how does Alinta stack up?

We’ve estimated bills across each state where Alinta Energy retails residential electricity to give you some idea as to how much this retailer might cost you. The below calculations assume the average electricity usage of a three person household on a single rate tariff at a selected postcode in each state. For a specific quote in your area, use our energy comparison tool above.

Alinta Electricity Prices VIC

Electricity plan Discount Annual cost
Fair Deal 43 43% $1,047.69
Sure Saver 35% $1,133.24
Standing Offer N/A $1,507.53

Costs based on annual usage calculations based on statistics from AER for a three person household on the Citipower network, August 2018.

Alinta Energy’s second product, the Sure Saver, comes with a guaranteed discount, rather than conditional. For this certainty, customers can expect to pay slightly more.

Alinta’s prices are reasonably competitive on the CitiPower network. You can see how it compares to other retailers in our Victoria price comparison report. Remember that these prices are based on Citipower rates and that prices vary on different networks.

Alinta Electricity Prices SA

Electricity plan Discount Annual cost
Fair Deal 25 25% $2,132.13
Standing Offer N/A $2,731.29

Costs based on annual usage calculations based on statistics from AER for a three person household on the SA Power network, August 2018.

Thanks to its huge 25% discount, Alinta Energy is generally price competitive in South Australia. You can see for yourself in our SA cost comparison report. It’s crucial to pay your bills on time if you’re a South Australian Alinta customer, as the discount will typically save you around $200 per quarter.

Alinta Electricity Prices NSW

Electricity plan Discount Annual cost
Fair Deal 27 27% $1,514.71
Standing Offer N/A $1,949.87

Costs based on annual usage calculations based on statistics from AER for a three person household on the Ausgrid network, August 2018.

Alinta Energy has one of the largest discounts of the retailers compared in our NSW electricity cost comparison report. In this case, that means Alinta works out as one of the cheapest retailers too. If you live on the Endeavour or Essential Energy Network however, you may be charged different rates.

Alinta Electricity Prices QLD

Electricity plan Discount Annual cost
Home SaverPlus 28% $1,411.50
Standing Offer N/A $1,805.42

Costs based on annual usage calculations based on statistics from AER for a three person household on the Energex network, August 2018.

Alinta Energy entered the South-East Queensland electricity market in mid-2017 through a joint-venture with the QLD government-owned CS Energy. Alinta’s only market offer, the Home SaverPlus, is one of the cheapest electricity deals for homes in Queensland, Canstar Blue’s calculations show.

Solar Power with Alinta Energy

Alinta Energy sells and installs solar systems in Western Australia. It says it makes solar simple, offering trusted advice, competitive prices and quality panels and inverters, backed by a five-year retailer warranty.

For customers with solar panels already installed, Alinta’s solar offers leave a little to be desired. In NSW, VIC and SA, Alinta’s feed-in tariff is relatively low. Queenslanders are a little better off in this respect, receiving 11c/kWh – higher than most retailers in the state.

6.1c/kWh 11.3c/kWh 6.8c/kWh 11c/kWh

Alinta Energy is outstanding in many respects, but environmental friendliness is unfortunately not one of them. Alinta owns a number of coal and gas generation assets, it doesn’t offer GreenPower, and it was one of the lowest rated companies in the Green Electricity Guide with a score of 2 out of 5 stars. If environmental friendliness is a paramount consideration for you, Alinta might not be the best fit.

Alinta Energy Small Business

Alinta Energy retails electricity to large and small business throughout Australia. Alinta says it has a team dedicated to helping its business energy customers, offering a direct phone number and “exceptional” customer service.

Alinta has a dedicated product for small business customers, aptly titled the Business Saver. Similar to its residential offerings, the Business Saver is a variable rate deal and includes a pay on time discount (shown below) over a two year benefit period.

Alinta retails both electricity and natural gas to Western Australian businesses, provided they are on the South West Interconnected System (South East WA) and spend at least $12,500 per year on electricity. However, it seems that WA businesses don’t receive a discount on electricity or gas.

Alinta Energy Natural Gas

In addition to its electricity deals, Alinta Energy also retails natural gas in Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Western Australia. Alinta’s natural gas deals are designed to complement its electricity services, providing large discounts to customers who sign up to both electricity and natural gas. Alinta Energy does not appear to offer any special deals to gas-only customers.

Alinta Victoria Natural Gas

Alinta customers on Fair Deal 43 who bundle their natural gas receive a 25% discount on gas usage charges. Just like its electricity service, gas customers are required to pay their bills in full and on time in order to receive the discount. The discount has a two-year benefit period and there are no exit fees for customers who leave early.

Alinta South Australia Natural Gas

Similar to Victoria, if you’re signed up to the Fair Deal 25 and bundle your natural gas, you’ll receive a tidy 12% discount off gas usage charges. The standard conditions of the Fair Deal 25 apply to the gas service as well, which means you’ll need to pay in full and on time to receive the discount. There is a two-year benefit period and the plan won’t lock you in with exit fees.

Alinta NSW Natural Gas

Fair Deal 27 customers in NSW who sign up both electricity and gas with Alinta Energy receive an 18% discount on natural gas usage charges – that is in addition to the 27% electricity discount. This discount has a two year benefit period and you’ll need to pay on time to receive it.

Alinta WA Natural Gas

Alinta Energy was the only natural gas retailer in WA until 2013. Yet despite the likes of Kleenheat, AGL, Origin and soon Simply Energy all entering the WA market, Alinta remains the dominant gas supplier. Alinta offers natural gas customers in WA a 25% discount off usage charges when they pay their bills on time. This is for a benefit period of two years, however, there are no exit fees for customers wanting to switch to another retailer.

Is Alinta Energy right for me?

Alinta Energy could be a nice fit for customers who aren’t too engaged with their electricity retailer. Its simple offers, competitive value and long benefit periods mean you probably won’t need to deal with your energy company all that often. If you do need to get in touch, Alinta Energy claims to have award-winning service, hopefully making the whole experience as hassle-free as possible.

Alinta seems to particularly excel in value when it comes to its dual fuel energy deals. The large additional discounts on natural gas when you bundle it with electricity make Alinta hard to look past if your home is connected to mains gas.

The downside to Alinta Energy is that it can work out very expensive if you don’t pay your bills on time and receive the large Fair Deal discounts. Additionally, Alinta doesn’t have many other customer perks and bonuses, nor does it offer any great deals for customers with solar panels. There are pros and cons to all energy retailers.
