Alinta Energy Review and Rates

Alinta Energy is owned by Hong Kong’s Chow Tai Fook Enterprises, and claims to be the only ‘true’ national electricity and gas company in Australia, with operations in five of the six Australian states. The power company holds generation assets nationwide and currently retails electricity in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. It also sells natural gas across these states as well as in Western Australia.

Alinta Energy says it likes to ‘keep things simple’ by using its wealth of market knowledge and power to offer customers deals on energy that are straightforward and transparent. Alinta Energy isn’t into gimmicks, instead keeping it pretty simple with just one or two market offers for electricity and gas. But while Alinta’s electricity is understandable, is it affordable? In this article, Canstar Blue takes a close look at Alinta Energy, including what’s on offer and what it might cost you.

Alinta Energy Plans

Alinta Energy only has one or two market electricity offers in NSW, VIC, QLD and SA. Like many retailers, Alinta changed its product offerings in July 2019 when new industry regulations kicked in. In lieu of these changes, the retailer has moved away from large discounts, instead introducing the ‘Home Deal’ and ‘Sports Pack’ plans, which claim to offer power that’s ‘affordable and simple to understand’.

Alinta’s market offers compare fairly well against the Reference Price or Victorian Default Offer in the case of Victoria.

Home Deal

The ‘Home Deal’ product from Alinta Energy has no lock-in terms or exit fees, and has flexible billing and payment options. This product has no frills, simply coming with competitive, variable rates. The Home Deal plan is available in NSW, QLD and Victoria.

Sports Pack

The Sports Pack is a unique plan from Alinta, giving customers a 12-month subscription to Kayo Basic, a sports streaming service. This is a no-discount plan with slightly higher rates than the plan above.

Retired Alinta Energy Products

In July 2019, Alinta Energy made sweeping changes to its product line-up to comply with regulatory changes, but a lot of existing customers may still be on the plans detailed below.

No Fuss

The No Fuss plan comes as a no lock-in contract, no exit fees, just competitive usage and supply rates. This deal is available to customers in South Australia.

Fair Deal

The Fair Deal plan from Alinta Energy was the flagship product and quite a competitive energy plan which included generous conditional discounts and reasonable electricity usage and supply charges. It had a benefit period of 12 months, with no exit fees or lock-in contract terms.

Fair Saver

Alinta Energy’s Fair Saver product was similar to the Fair Deal plan. However, it had a smaller discount that varied across each state. The Fair Saver plan had a benefit period of 12 months and had no exit fees or lock-in contract terms.

Home Saver Plus

The Home Saver Plus was offered in Queensland and featured a large discount for customers who paid their bills on time. It featured a benefit period of 12 months, had no lock-in conditions or exit fees, and had reasonable electricity usage and supply rates.

Alinta Energy Solar

Alinta Energy sells and installs solar systems in Western Australia. It says it makes solar simple, offering trusted advice, competitive prices and quality panels and inverters, backed by a five-year retailer warranty.

For customers with solar panels already installed, Alinta Energy’s solar offers leave a little to be desired. In NSW, VIC and SA, Alinta Energy’s feed-in tariff is relatively low. Queenslanders are a little better off in this respect, receiving 11c/kWh – higher than most retailers in the state.

Alinta Energy Solar Feed-in Tariffs

Regardless of whether a customer has purchased solar panels through Alinta Energy or elsewhere, those signing up to solar may still be able to receive a feed-in tariff for any power their solar panels export into the grid. Here’s what you can expect to receive depending on the state you’re in:

NSW VIC SA QLD
7.5c/kWh 10.2c/kWh 9.5c/kWh 11c/kWh

Currently, customers in NSW, Queensland and Victoria can sign up to the Home Deal gas plan. There’s also the option of signing up to the Sports Pack plan, however customers must be connected to a Sports Pack electricity plan to do so.

Is Alinta Energy right for me?

Alinta Energy could be a nice fit for customers who aren’t too engaged with their electricity retailer. Its simple offers and competitive value means you probably won’t need to deal with your energy company all that often. If you do need to get in touch, Alinta Energy claims to have award-winning service, hopefully making the whole experience as hassle-free as possible.

Alinta Energy seems to particularly excel in value when it comes to its dual fuel energy deals, with convenience being king for those who don’t want to deal with two companies for electricity and gas. Perhaps the only downside to Alinta Energy is that it doesn’t offer any great deals for customers with solar panels in most areas. But there are pros and cons to all energy retailers, so be sure to regularly compare offers to see how your deal stacks up.
