Canstar Blue Outstanding Value Energy Awards 2021

Grudge purchases don’t come much bigger than energy, which is why Canstar Blue takes pride in helping Australian consumers get the best value they can when choosing an energy provider. This means paying a competitive price for power, but also getting the incentives, features and service you deserve. We publish annual customer satisfaction ratings to show which electricity providers are best-rated by bill-payers. But we also leverage data from our price comparison tool to show – based on our expert methodology – which electricity providers consistently offer superior value across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT, so you can make a more informed decision when purchasing energy.

“These awards are all about finding out which energy providers are consistently offering great value for new customers,” Canstar Blue Energy Editor, Jared Mullane, said. “Electricity costs will always be a sore point for most households, but cheap prices don’t always translate to the best value. That’s why we’ve built comparison tools that allow Aussie consumers to compare based on the cheapest prices, but also on the overall value proposition offered by energy companies across prices, plan features and customer service, all based on our expert data collection and research methodologies.

“These awards showcase the energy providers that have provided the best overall value performance across the states and territories; the awards are another helpful point of reference for households when comparing their options to find the best plan and provider for their needs.”

Outstanding Value Award – NSW: GloBird Energy

NSW Outstanding Value 2021

GloBird Energy is Canstar Blue’s Outstanding Value award winner for electricity plans in New South Wales, having performed consistently well relative to the market throughout the observation period. GloBird has been one of the most competitively-priced providers across the three electricity distribution networks of NSW, with no lock-in contracts or exit fees. GloBird’s conditional discounts and additional incentives are what stood out with this provider, reminding customers that, sometimes, low rates aren’t the only thing worth changing plans for.

“More than any other state, households in New South Wales are drawn to the traditional big three energy providers, but GloBird is leading the pack of challengers with compelling offers,” Mr Mullane said. “GloBird marketed discounts and low rates to attract new customers, which has helped the provider to build a loyal customer base and score consistently well in our annual reviews.”

Outstanding Value Award – VIC: GloBird Energy

VIC Outstanding Value 2021

GloBird Energy has also taken out the Outstanding Value title in the hugely competitive electricity market of Victoria. Even with several well-established providers in the state – plus a growing number of smaller challenger brands – GloBird continued to stand out from the crowd with well-priced offers and interesting value-add incentives, including its unique Small Ideas membership deal. Although some providers reserve their cheapest rates for certain parts of Victoria, GloBird was consistently one of the cheapest across all five distribution networks in the state.

“In the fast-moving energy market of Victoria, energy providers need to work incredibly hard to stay relevant, but the provides, and consumers themselves, are realising this doesn’t just mean bigger and bigger discounts,” Mr Mullane said. “Having a reputation for good customer service and a unique offer is hugely important, but not at the expense of low prices. Victorians are energy savvy and will not tolerate higher than necessary prices. GloBird is one of the providers that’s now striking the right balance between good features and competitive rates to keep existing customers happy, as well as attracting new ones.”

Outstanding Value Award – QLD: ReAmped Energy

QLD Outstanding Value 2021

ReAmped Energy picked up Canstar Blue’s Outstanding Value award for electricity plans in Queensland. Though a smaller, independent retailer, ReAmped has earned a strong reputation for good value and service across the south-east, compelling hundreds of people to switch in just months thanks to the low rates offered. ReAmped Energy is particularly applauded for its price consistency, with the award recognising that it has offered one of the cheapest electricity plans in south east Queensland for the majority of the observation period.

“You can’t underestimate the impact this company has had on energy price competition in Queensland,” Mr Mullsane said. “ReAmped has helped educate Queenslanders about the benefits of energy price competition and continues to enjoy a positive reputation in the state. While competition may continue to grow in Queensland, it’s safe to say that ReAmped will continue to be an important player in terms of value, thanks to the impeccable service and low rates offered by the brand.”

Outstanding Value Award – SA: GloBird Energy

SA Outstanding Value 2021

Continuing its dominance across the country, GloBird Energy has won Canstar Blue’s Outstanding Value award for electricity plans in South Australia. Not only was GloBird consistently one of the cheapest providers in the state but it also offered some of the strongest features, especially in regards to payment options and having no exit fees or lock-in contracts. South Australians can typically choose between a handful of options from GloBird, some of which reward customers for paying on time by direct debit or by bundling their electricity with natural gas.

“Everyone knows the high price South Australians pay for power but GloBird is doing a decent job in helping to reduce costs for struggling households and anyone else just looking for a good deal,” Mr Mullane said. “There is often a perception that switching to a smaller provider will come with all risk and no reward but GloBird is proving that’s not always the case. After years of missing out, South Australians are seeing intense price competition, and GloBird is right up there in terms of offering great value whether you qualify for any conditional discount or not.”

Outstanding Value Award – ACT: Origin Energy

ACT Outstanding Value 2021

While many households in the Australian Capital Territory will be unaware of the relatively new energy price competition going on in the territory, those who are could benefit through competitive offers from the likes of Origin Energy. While regulated energy rates remain in place, customers can now shop around for cheaper deals and Origin has led the way in providing the best overall value relative to the market throughout the observed period in Canstar Blue’s Outstanding Value award research, taking out the title for electricity plans in the ACT.

“Origin is clearly doing a lot to help improve competition and drive down power prices in the Canberra area,” Mr Mullane said. “It’s giving households in the nation’s capital something to think about when it comes to their energy prices, not least because it consistently offers one of the cheapest deals on our database for the ACT. The area could really benefit from more competition and Origin has shown just what can be achieved when the energy providers take it seriously. The challenge will be encouraging more people in the ACT to consider their options and shop around for better value.”

Outstanding Value Award – TAS: Energy Locals

TAS Outstanding Value 2021

In its inaugural year, Energy Locals has won Canstar Blue’s Outstanding Value award in Tasmania. A relatively new player in Tassie, Energy Locals prides itself as being a social enterprise, not a traditional power company. This means Tasmanians can choose to have a portion of their rates go towards many charitable organisations, including the McGrath Foundation, Starlight Children’s Foundation and Cancer Council to name just a few. In addition to its community-based approach, Energy Locals offers access to wholesale rates, power usage that is 100% offset at no extra cost, as well as no exit fees or lock-in contracts.

“Energy Locals is certainly shaking up the tight-knit energy market in Tasmania, with deals that offer customers outstanding value,” Mr Mullane said. “Energy Locals is encouraging households to take their energy costs back into their own hands, giving customers access to low wholesale rates in exchange for a reasonable yearly membership fee. It’s great to see a genuine alternative to the other established players in market, which should increase price competition further in Tassie.”
