OPPO’s new A5 Pro 5G phone offers more flash for less cash

OPPO’s latest release, the A5 Pro 5G, is the brand’s newest addition to its budget-friendly A series. Despite its low price, the device comes jam-packed with features that offer great value for the sub-$400 price point. Built with a long-lasting battery and tough exterior protection, this phone is made to last.

The well-priced device comes with many of the bells and whistles normally seen with more expensive handsets, although there’s still a lot of competition in this space with budget-friendly devices from competitors like Samsung’s Galaxy A-series. OPPO A5 Pro 5G features and specs

Design and display

The OPPO A5 Pro 5G features a 6.67-inch display with up to 120Hz refresh rate, along with a maximum brightness of 1,000 nits in sunlight. You’ll also get OPPO’s 1,000 nits Ultra Bright Display, which optimises the user’s screen and display settings to enhance viewing even in full sun.

Without compromising style for durability, the exterior is made with military-grade drop-resistant aluminium and bionic cushioning to withstand impact, passing 14 military-grade tests, giving users protection against most drops and bumps. The A5 Pro 5G features Corning Gorilla Glass on the front, which has been tested at drops of up to 1m on rough surfaces and is 160% more shatter-resistant than some other OPPO devices.

Along with its tough build, the A5 Pro 5G comes with a dust and water-resistant IP69 rating, which means it can survive being in 1.5m of water for up to 30 minutes and handle up to 80°C of hot water, great for those using their device in messy or hot environments.

The display also features ‘Glove Touch’ and ‘Splash Touch’ which allows users to comfortably use the device to its full capabilities when wearing gloves, when the screen is wet or when you have something like water or oil on your hands.

The A5 Pro 5G comes in two colour ways, Mocha Brown and Olive Green — changing things up from the typically more neutral colours that devices come in, like black and white.

Performance and battery

Underneath the tough exterior, the A5 Pro 5G has a Mediatek Dimensity 6300 processor, offering strong support for AI use and hi-definition usage like gaming and streaming, while using less power than other processors. It comes with 8GB of expandable RAM for a fast response time, along with 256GB of storage space. The A5 Pro 5G utilises unused storage for memory to ensure the phone runs faster and smoother when multitasking.

According to OPPO, the 5,800mAh battery will last users up to 35 hours of phone call time, or up to 16 hours of mobile gaming. This is OPPO’s biggest battery yet and has only been featured in one other release, the Reno 13 series. The battery also supports OPPO’s 45W SUPERVOOC Flash Charging, meaning users can quickly get back to using their device, charging to 100% in around 83 minutes or 10% in just under five minutes.

With the phone’s quick processing rates, it also features VC cooling, which helps the device stay cool and stable during power-intensive activities like gaming. It also comes with OPPO’s new AI GameBoost, which adjusts frame rates to optimise your gaming experience for up to five-hours of non-stop gaming.

Cameras and extras

The A5 Pro 5G includes a 50MP main camera and a 2MP portrait camera on the back and an 8MP selfie camera embedded in the screen’s display. While it may not be the biggest and best camera that OPPO has ever produced, the back camera will be more than capable of taking sharp, clean photos and detailed portraits. Users are also able to use OPPO’s Dual-View Video feature, meaning that you can film with the front and back cameras simultaneously.

OPPO’s AI technology is also used within the camera system, with the ability to retouch photos, erase unwanted people or items in the background and unblur parts of images that may look out of focus or unclear.

Perhaps the most exciting thing about the camera is the underwater photography available with the IP69 rating, much like the OPPO Reno13 series. Users are able to capture photos and videos underwater for up to 30 minutes in water less than 1.5m deep.
