Compare the iPhone SE, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, iPhone 15

With each new iPhone release, Apple usually discontinues much of the previous year’s device lineup, but the base models of the devices, like the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13, will typically still be offered for a few years. You might prefer to pick up an older model iPhone to save on the more expensive price point of the newer iPhones. Likewise, Apple’s cheaper iPhone SE is usually readily available if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly iPhone.

Keep in mind that the below prices are the RRP for that iPhone at its launch. Older iPhones will typically drop in price and may be available with discounts.

Telstra iPhone plans

Telstra is one of the few telcos to offer iPhones on a plan. You’ll usually find the latest iPhones available, along with some older devices, depending on stock levels.

How much you pay per month for your Telstra iPhone plan will depend on the device you choose, storage size, the repayment period and the Telstra plan you choose to bundle with your device.

Keep in mind that a longer repayment period will have a cheaper monthly cost, but you’ll be required to stick with Telstra for a longer period.

Signing up to Telstra iPhone plans can have its advantages. Telstra offers eligible customers access to its rewards program, and the telco is known to frequently offer free subscriptions to streaming services from time to time.

Optus iPhone plans

As Australia’s second largest telco, Optus also offers a range of iPhone plans, including the latest iPhones and older iPhone models, if stock is available.

Optus, like the other two big telcos, separates its iPhone repayments from its plans, so you’ll need to choose your preferred iPhone model, storage size and repayment period. Then you’ll need to add on your choice of Optus postpaid phone plan.

If you’re interested in signing up to Optus iPhone plans, eligible Optus customers will also gain access to Optus SubHub — the telco’s subscription bundling service. You’ll be able to save on your subscription costs, such as Netflix or BINGE, when you add more services to your SubHub. Not only that, but Optus customers are able to sign up to Optus Sport for a cheaper monthly price than non-Optus customers.

Vodafone iPhone plans

As with Telstra and Optus, you can also sign up to Vodafone iPhone plans with a range of iPhone models available. You’ll find the most recent iPhones on offer, along with older devices as long as stock is available.

You’ll bundle your iPhone device of choice (including storage size and colour) with a Vodafone postpaid plan. The phone’s repayment period and your chosen plan’s price will determining how much your phone bill will cost each month.

Vodafone doesn’t tend to provide as many extras as Telstra or Optus, but you’ll typically get a cheaper plan price and Vodafone is known to offer plan discounts and bonus data from time to time.

Amaysim iPhone plans

Prepaid telco Amaysim also sells iPhones, however devices are not technically offered as iPhone plans in the same way that the big three telcos offer them. You’re able to buy a new iPhone from Amaysim but you’ll buy it outright and then bundle with one of Amaysim’s prepaid phone plans. However, these phones aren’t locked to Amaysim and you are free to cancel your plan. Amaysim offers a range of new iPhones including the latest iPhone series and some older devices.

How do I compare iPhone plans?

If you’ve settled on the iPhone you want, but aren’t dedicated to signing up to one provider over another, doing an iPhone plans comparison is a great way to find which plan (and provider) is going to best meet your needs.

To compare plans, simply use our free phone plan comparison tool at the top of this page. Simply select the device you want to compare plans for, along with any other filters that might be important to you, such as data allowance. It helps to have a general idea of what you’re looking for, whether that’s a minimum data inclusion or a rough price range. This can narrow down your choices and make it easier to find the right plan for your needs.

What are the best iPhone plans in Australia

If you’re after the best iPhone plans in Australia, the bad news is that there really isn’t such a thing as the ‘best’ plan.

What constitutes the best plan for one person will be different to another person’s preferences. That’s why it’s important to have an idea of what you want from a phone plan — whether it’s big data inclusions, entertainment extras, etc — and compare plans that offer this.

Also keep in mind that each of the big three telcos offering iPhone plans own and operate their own mobile networks. Comparing mobile network coverage, especially if you’re in a regional or remote area, might also help you determine which telco’s iPhone plans are going to be best for you.

Which iPhone should I buy?

Choosing which iPhone is right for you can be daunting — especially if you’re not sure about what you really want from your phone. There are a few things you might wish to consider which can help you narrow down which iPhone will be best for you.

The newest iPhone isn’t always the best iPhone for you. You might find that an older device is better suited to your needs, especially if you’re on a tighter budget. The newest iPhones are typically more expensive than the older counterparts, but you can save hundreds by picking up last year’s model rather than the very latest Apple release — and still grab a great phone with premium features!

Cost

iPhones don’t come cheap, but having a rough budget might make the decision between two phones much easier. This might also help inform which storage size you go for.

Cameras

Typically the cameras will be one of the biggest differences between the more standard iPhone and the ‘Pro’ version. If you’re into your phone photography and take a lot of photos, especially nature photos and macro shots, you might find the camera inclusions of the Pro iPhone suits your needs best. However if you don’t take many photos, or you’re not fussed about the camera specs, you might prefer the standard iPhone model.

Extra features

In addition to a bigger battery and more impressive cameras, Apple also tends to pack some extra features into its pro iPhones. Some of these features could be a big drawcard or they could be minor additions. Consider whether these features are important enough to you to justify the extra cost of the pro iPhone.

Size

In addition to storage size, you’ll also want to consider the physical size of the iPhone. Typically Apple releases a standard iPhone and a larger (or smaller) version of this phone, alongside an iPhone Pro and its larger counterpart. The larger size iPhones will also typically have larger battery sizes, but it usually includes the majority of the same features and specs, so it’s more of a toss up between if you want a bigger phone or not.

FAQs about iPhone plans

It’s no secret that iPhones are not exactly cheap. For many of us, signing up to a plan might be the more affordable way of buying an iPhone, with your device payments split over 12, 24 or 36 months. However, some people might think that this is a more expensive way to buy, compared to buying your phone outright.

While it may have been cheaper to buy an iPhone outright in the past (and it technically may be now if you pair your phone with a cheap SIM-only phone plan), when you buy an iPhone on a plan, the price of the device works out to be pretty much exactly the same price as it would cost to buy it outright. You can read our guide on buying a phone outright vs on a plan for a more detailed analysis of these costs.

iPhone pricing is rarely ‘cheap’ — but depending on your choice of provider and plan, you can find ways to pay less each month for your brand new device. Most iPhone plans currently begin from around the $90-$100 per month mark for both your mobile plan and phone payment, but prices will vary due to your choice of device repayment term.

Excluding device payments, the postpaid phone plans that you bundle with your iPhone start at $49 from Optus with 30GB data, $49 from Vodafone with 50GB of data or $62 from Telstra with 50GB data. Optus, Telstra and Vodafone each include unlimited data. Optus and Telstra’s speeds after you use up all your data are 1.5Mbps, whereas Vodafone’s speeds are at 2Mbps.

Not sure which iPhone you want? You can read our hands-on iPhone reviews to find out more about a range of iPhones.

When buying an iPhone, it can be easy to get sucked into purchasing additional extras for your iPhone, especially if you want to protect your phone from potential damage or breakage. AppleCare+ offers additional protection — essentially insurance — for your new iPhone, covering instances of theft and loss, but it does come at a cost.

For some, it can provide extra peace of mind, especially if you’re prone to losing or damaging your phone, but for others, it might not be worth it. You can read our guide on AppleCare+ to see if AppleCare+ is right for you.

Considering the high cost of buying a brand new iPhone — especially the latest model — you might consider turning to a refurbished iPhone. These are essentially second-hand iPhones which have been previously used, but it might have a replacement battery, a new phone screen, etc.

Several telcos and other companies that sell refurbished iPhones, will have been professionally refurbished and will go through quality control checks to ensure you’re getting a device in good working order, even if it has a few cosmetic flaws. Buying a second-hand phone from an online marketplace or directly from the previous owner means it usually won’t have been refurbished and could have issues with battery capacity or the performance.

If you want to know more, you can find out more about refurbished phones and if they’re worth buying in our guide.
