Telstra NBN Plans & Prices Compared

As Australia’s largest telco, Telstra offers some of the most popular and feature-packed NBN plans in the market. Telstra was one of the first big service providers to be more upfront about realistic NBN speed expectations, and its NBN plans continue to offer consistently fast speeds, even during peak use periods.

With all NBN plans available on a month-to-month basis with no lock-in contracts, Telstra has plenty to offer in the NBN space. As Australia’s largest internet provider, Telstra has close to 50% of the NBN market share, but just how do Telstra’s NBN plans compare to other plans on the market and what sort of value do you get for your money? Read on for details of Telstra’s home internet NBN plans, prices and inclusions.

Telstra NBN Plans

Of all the Telstra internet plans on offer, the telco’s NBN plans are perhaps the most popular product, especially considering that the NBN rollout is complete in most cities and regional hubs, and old wired technologies are soon to become obsolete. Telstra NBN plans require a $99 connection fee for new customers, although Telstra may waive this fee from time to time, so check the Telstra site before signing up. New customers will also be supplied with a Telstra WiFi modem on month-to-month plans, although cancelling your plan before 24 months will require you to pay off the remainder of the $200 modem (unless you purchase upfront).

When signing up to Telstra NBN, you’ll have a choice between several different speed tiers — NBN 25 (also known as Basic), NBN 50 (also known as Standard) and NBN 100 (also known as Fast), plus speed add-ons of NBN 250 (also known as Superfast) and NBN 1000 (also known as Ultrafast)— with unlimited data available on all plans. Access to certain speed tiers also depends on your location and home NBN connection.

Telstra NBN speeds: at a glance

Telstra has streamlined its NBN plans, offering just three main plans with various extras you can add on to your plan. Customers can select from NBN 25, NBN 50, or NBN 100 speeds.

If you want faster NBN speeds, you’ll need to sign up to the NBN 100 plan and add on a Superfast NBN 250 add-on for an additional $25 per month, or the Ultrafast NBN 1000 for an extra $60 per month. Telstra lists Typical Evening Speeds for all six NBN tiers, which give customers an indication of the average plan speeds experienced by users between 7pm and 11pm. Plans with NBN 100, 250 and 1000 speeds might only be available to select households with certain NBN connections, mostly FTTP and HFC connections.

Below are the typical evening speeds Telstra lists for the six NBN main speed tiers on fixed line networks (FTTP, FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, and HFC).

Home Phone Calls with Telstra

All plans come with unlimited standard calls to local, national, and Australian mobile numbers. A small allowance of 500 calls to ’13’ numbers per month is included, while international calls are charged on a pay-as-you-go basis (with rates beginning at $0.01 per minute, plus a $0.55 call connection fee). You’ll also get included MessageBank, Family Calls Benefit, and call ID.

How does Telstra compare to other NBN providers?

Telstra has some feature-packed plans, but you will need to pay a minimum of $85 each month to get standard NBN 25 speeds. However, the trade-off is that Telstra adds quite a lot for your money with Telstra NBN bundles.

If you are looking for an alternative broadband plan with included entertainment, Fetch TV is available on NBN plans from Optus, Aussie Broadband, iiNet, Internode and iPrimus. Similar to Telstra TV, Fetch offers streaming (Netflix, Stan, YouTube, etc.), free-to-air channels, and more.

Overall, Telstra does offer some of the most expensive plans on the market, so it may not be the best choice for those on a budget. If you’re looking to shop around, other providers worth keeping an eye out for include:

Is Telstra NBN worth the money?

With month-to-month and unlimited data plans now available, Telstra offers more flexibility and choice than before, in addition to a range of extras. It has also put some effort into improving its NBN speeds, plus, Telstra limits access to fast-speed plans to customers with an eligible NBN connection, to ensure you’re not paying for a plan with unachievable speeds.

Telstra is more than just broadband – it’s a whole ‘entertainment’ company thanks to its partnerships with entertainment providers like Xbox, Disney+, BINGE and Foxtel. Customers who like TV and sport may find merit in splurging for streaming extras such as Kayo, BINGE, Flash or Foxtel Now, which few other providers can match in terms of all-out entertainment value.

In a seriously competitive NBN market, Telstra proves time and time again that it’s not just about broadband – it wants to take care of the whole house’s entertainment and communications needs.
