Update: Starlink’s Vice President of Engineering, Michael Nicholls, has shared that Starlink service has now mostly recovered and the outage lasted approximately 2.5 hours.
Many Aussies have woken up to the news that Space X’s satellite internet service, Starlink, is down — that’s if they can get online to find out what’s going on.
Millions of users across the world, including in Australia and New Zealand, have been without service for several hours. In a post on X, Starlink shared the following statement: “Starlink is currently in a network outage and we are actively implementing a solution. We appreciate your patience, we’ll share an update once this issue is resolved.”
Starlink’s Vice President of Engineering, Michael Nicholls, attributed the outage to “key internal software services” in the system’s core network.
The outage will not only impact customers who buy their Starlink directly through the satellite service, but also customers who have their Starlink service through Telstra.
Space X’s CEO Elon Musk also shared an update on X, apologising for the outage and stating that “SpaceX will remedy root cause to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
Starlink reportedly has around six million global subscribers and 200,000 users in Australia alone. The low-earth orbit satellite service has supplied high-speed broadband to rural Australians since 2021, and now offers coverage across regional and metropolitan areas.
What does this mean for Starlink customers?
If you’re a Starlink customer, unfortunately it’s a waiting game until service is restored. You may need to rely on mobile data and using your phone to hotspot your mobile data onto devices such as laptops. Unfortunately for some Aussies in regional and remote areas where mobile reception may be patchy, they may have to simply just wait it out.
