Felix Mobile launches new, data-packed SIM plans

Planet-first provider Felix Mobile is the latest Aussie telco to tweak plans and pricing — launching all-new SIM plans packed with data.

The prepaid telco has unveiled two new SIM-only plans; however, it’s also raised the price of its flagship unlimited data offering. While Felix isn’t the only mobile provider to jack up costs in recent months, its new plans give existing customers several cheaper options, alongside some welcome new features.

Felix Mobile: new plans, new prices

Felix Mobile burst on the scene back in late 2020, offering a single ‘endless’ plan with unlimited data for just $35. Of course, that unlimited data came with a catch: speeds were initially restricted to 5Mbps (megabits per second). Later, Felix Mobile revised this and increased speeds to a much more usable 20Mbps, which is fast enough for most activities including streaming, gaming, and video calling.

Under the new product suite, Felix has kept its unlimited data plan, but increased the price to $40 for every monthly renewal.  You’ll still get unlimited standard national talk and text in Australia, plus unlimited data at speed of up to 20Mbps.

For customers wanting a cheaper deal, Felix Mobile now offers a $25 plan with 25GB of full-speed data, and a $30 plan with 50GB of fast data. Both plans also include unlimited data use at speeds of 1.5Mbps, which kicks in if you use up your plan’s full-speed gigabytes before you renew; this way, you won’t pay any excess data charges for use in Australia.

If you do require extra data at a faster speed, you can buy an additional 10GB at any time for $10. Both the $25 and $35 plans also include unlimited data banking, so you can roll over and stow away any unused gigabytes each time you renew your plan.

Felix Mobile also offers several international add-ons, including unlimited overseas talk and text to 40 countries for $5 per month. International roaming in 40 countries is also available for $20, and includes 4GB of data, 100 minutes of calls, and 100 standard SMS.

Currently, new customers can save 20% on plan fees for their first three months by using the code FELIX20 at sign-up. This offer is available until withdrawn, terms apply.

All of Felix Mobile’s plans are offered on a prepaid, monthly expiry, with no lock-in contract. Each plan includes 4G network coverage on the Vodafone network, is eSIM-compatible, and can be self-managed via the Felix app.

Aside from offering data-packed prepaid plans, Felix Mobile claims to be powered by 100% renewable electricity, and invests in certified carbon offset projects that meet the eligibility requirements of the government’s Climate Active Neutral Standard. The telco also plants one tree per month for every customer, in partnership with One Tree Planted.

How do Felix Mobile’s new plans compare?

A big plus for Felix Mobile customers is the guarantee that no matter how much data you use domestically, you’ll never be hit with a surprise excess usage fee — and you won’t have your data use unexpectedly cut off. The telco’s two new plans include unlimited speed-capped data as a backup, and you’ll also have the option of tapping into your data bank if needed.

Felix Mobile is one of only four Aussie telcos offering overage-free plans, and is easily the cheapest. Telstra, Optus and Vodafone also give postpaid customers a monthly full-speed data allowance, along with unlimited data at reduced speeds: 1.5Mbps on Telstra and Optus plans, and 2Mbps with Vodafone.

However, go with one of the big three providers, and you’re looking at monthly costs beginning at $45 from Vodafone, $49 from Optus, and $62 with Telstra. Vodafone’s cheapest plan includes 40GB of fast data, Optus’ entry-level option features 30GB, and Telstra includes 50GB; unlike Felix, all plans also offer access to 5G speeds where available (although Telstra caps this at 250Mbps on its smallest plan).

If you’re not fussed on 5G, and want more data for your dollars, a switch to Felix Mobile can easily cut down your mobile bill — provided you’re happy to go prepaid. However, customers who don’t require the safety net of unlimited speed-capped data may also want to compare Felix Mobile to other smaller SIM-only providers before making the switch.
