About Kelvinator Air Conditioners
The Kelvinator story began when young engineer Nathaniel Wales had an idea for an electric refrigeration unit for the home. He took his idea to Edmund Copeland and Arnold Goss, who was the secretary of Buick Automobiles at the time. Copeland and Goss recognised the brilliance of Wales’s idea and got right to work on manufacturing and distributing it.
The Kelvinator company was founded in 1914 in Detroit as “Electro-Automatic Refrigerating Company”, and was among the first to make and sell refrigerators in the USA. They were so successful that two years later, they renamed themselves “Kelvinator” in honour of British mathematical physicist and engineer, 1st Baron Kelvin, who developed the concept of absolute zero and after had the ‘Kelvin’ temperature scale named after him.
During World War II, Kelvinator engineers in the London branch contributed to field testing airplane components at ultra-low temperatures and testing instruments under high altitude conditions. This research is credited with having saved the lives of many Allied air crews.
Kelvinator has been present in Australia since 1921 as a division of multi-national corporation Electrolux, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of home appliances. Kelvinator began producing air conditioners in 1936.
Kelvinator air conditioner innovations
In 2008, Kelvinator introduced a line of light commercial air conditioners.
Their air conditioners now all come with several innovations as standard:
- Peak Smart technology combines with your home’s energy provider to reduce appliance power consumption during times of peak demand, thereby saving money on power bills.
- Kelvinator offers seven different fan speeds for cooling different areas, and a three-mode sleep function maintains a comfortable temperature overnight.
- A self-cleaning evaporator prevents bacteria or mould from growing inside the unit.
