Toyota is one of the two biggest automotive companies in the world, and their Australian subsidiary Toyota Australia is no exception. The company manufactured over 100,000 vehicles in 2014, and saw net sales of $8.4 billion. Toyota was establish in Japan in 1937, by the Toyoda family from whom the company’s name is derived, and they went on to produce a number of iconic vehicles like the 2000GT, the MR2 and the Corolla, which went on to become the best-selling car model in history. Toyota Australia is one of just three automotive companies (along with Ford and Holden) that manufacture cars in Australia, with their manufacturing plant located in Altona, Victoria. Unfortunately, the costs of manufacturing in Australia combined with our small market mean that Toyota has decided to end their manufacturing operations from 2017, but rest assured; the company will continue to sell cars that are ideal for our unique environment.
Toyota’s 4WD range is extensive, with six different models available to cope with everything from the streets of Sydney to the rugged sand dunes of the Simpson Desert. Their road-focused models are the RAV4, a medium-sized family SUV, and the Kluger, a larger 7-seat model, and their off-road models also come in several flavours; the Prado is a large, capable off-road 4WD available in two or four-door varieties, whilst the LandCruiser is a big, luxurious, V8-powered machine capable of extreme off-road feats. The FJ Cruiser is a funky throwback to the FJ LandCruiser of several decades ago and is also very capable off-road, whilst the HiLux is Toyota’s workhorse ute which comes in either dual-cab or cab chassis models.
What our survey respondents say…
In late 2014 Canstar Blue surveyed customers within a survey group who have bought a brand new SUV or four wheel drive from a dealership in the last three years – in this case, 478 Australians. These were some of the comments made by survey respondents that had bought a Toyota 4WD.
- “It has lived up to all expectations reliable, comfortable, suits our requirements well”
- “Reliable, smooth, economy-wise efficient, comfortable, elegant looking”
- “Annoyed that one has to go to the original dealer for warranty extension. This is not always possible if travelling.”
- “Great and reliable car.”
