Exetel refreshes its NBN range: Super-fast internet for just $80

Fact Checked Fact Checked

July 1 might be most known for the first day of a new financial year, along with both energy bill and NBN plan price increases. But in a surprise move, telco Exetel has rolled out sweeping changes to how it does NBN plans.

The massive overhaul sees Exetel (which is owned by Superloop) remove all of its existing NBN plans — along with its range of non-NBN fibre internet plans — to be replaced by a single simple plan, called the ‘One Plan’. This fast-speed plan aims to remove the confusion around NBN speeds, prices and promos.

“The telco industry has delivered confusion disguised as control. Way too many plans and too much jargon. And not fast or simple enough. Exetel is changing that today,” Mehul Dave, Group Executive, Consumer, at Superloop said.

“If you see through all the plans and promo periods and that whole game of intentional confusion and you just want fast, reliable internet – this is for you.”

What does Exetel’s One Plan get you for $80?

For just $80 per month, customers will get access to a fast-speed NBN plan with 500 megabits per second (Mbps) download and 40Mbps speeds, which is in line with the speed tier changes that NBN Co is rolling out this year. With high-speed NBN plans typically costing $100 per month or more, Exetel’s new plan offers access to faster internet, but without the big price tag.

However, fast-speed NBN is only available to homes with certain NBN connection types. This means that households that aren’t on Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) NBN connections will miss out. Customers should be aware that this plan is also only available as BYO modem, so you’ll need to supply your own device capable of supporting 500Mbps speeds.

In addition to fast speeds at a more affordable price point, Exetel is also offering the option to boost your speed up to 1000/50Mbps. Warp Speed boosts are available for an additional $1 per day (with current typical evening speeds of 811Mbps/42Mbps), with each charge being added to your next internet bill.

Exetel is also offering the option to ‘hibernate’ your plan if you’re travelling or just need a break. You’ll be credited $1 each day that you hibernate and speeds are slowed to 12Mbps.

What happens to existing Exetel customers?

If you’re an existing Exetel customer who doesn’t have a fast NBN connection type, or you don’t need the fast speeds, the good news is that there is no change to your service and you can stay on your current plan. However, the recommendation is that customers who have an Fibre to the Building (FTTB), Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) connection type make the switch to a Superloop plan, which might better suit their needs.
