Aussies told to compare NBN deals

Aussies urged to shop around for a better NBN deal amid price rises

It might not be the best time of year for costs to be going up, but for many Aussies, their NBN plan price may be about to increase — if it hasn’t already.

After much back and forth between NBN Co and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) resulted in changes to the Special Access Undertaking (SAU) being accepted and finalised — NBN prices are set to increase for some plans.

Customers of Telstra and Aussie Broadband, along with other providers, have already received notice of changes in recent months. It’s expected that more providers will follow suit and inform customers of these changes if they haven’t already.

However, the ACCC has put NBN providers on notice that it will be monitoring providers to ensure that information on price changes is upfront and clear for customers. The ACCC especially holds concerns with how NBN retailers could be representing the different speed tiers and the suitability of certain speeds for a household’s needs.

“This week we wrote to all NBN retailers making clear our expectation that they are upfront and honest with consumers about what the price changes will be and why these changes are happening,” ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey said.

“NBN retailers should not be pushing households towards more expensive offers with speed inclusions that are higher than they need. If we were to see this, it would raise concerns. We expect NBN retailers to provide clear information to consumers about suitable plans for their circumstances and preferences.”

While wholesale prices for the most popular speed tier — NBN 50 — will see an increase, wholesale prices for the cheaper NBN 25 speed and for the faster (and more expensive) NBN 100 speed, are set to drop. However, it’s up to each NBN provider as to what they charge customers. So it’s ultimately up to your provider as to whether the price rise or price drop, will be passed on to you.

Some NBN prices are increasing — now is the time to compare NBN plans to find a better deal

With many Aussies set to see a hike in their NBN bill, the ACCC is urging Aussies to shop around for a better NBN deal.

“It has never been more important for consumers to compare prices between retailers to make sure they are getting a deal that represents good value for them. There are significant price differences between retailers so it is worth seeing what other deals are available,” Ms Brakey said.

That’s why it’s important to compare NBN plans from a range of providers to find the best plan for your needs. Having an idea of what speed tier you want — and also which speeds are available at your home — is the first step in choosing an NBN plan.

You can use our free NBN plan comparison tool to compare NBN plans and providers across a range of filters, including speed tier, modem inclusions and more. Keep in mind that some NBN providers may soon change their prices, and some prices listed may include discounts that are available for a limited time. It’s best to compare the standard pricing to see what kind of value for money you can get without discounts applied.
