Tangerine launches a-peeling new 5G broadband plan

Value-focused telco Tangerine has launched a fresh and juicy new 5G mobile broadband plan that offers speed, flexibility and a competitive price — giving customers more options for fast connections away from home.

Tangerine’s 5G plan includes a data-only SIM, a hefty 400GB of data each month, and access to parts of Telstra’s 3G, 4G and 5G networks nation-wide. And to celebrate the launch, the plan comes with a six-month discount, down to $59.90 per month (then $64.90 each month ongoing).

“Our customers have been asking for reliable connectivity on the go, and we’re thrilled to be able to deliver that with the launch of our 5G mobile broadband product,” Tangerine CEO Andrew Branson said.

“Since 2014, we have been working hard to provide Australians with fast, reliable and cost effective internet solutions. With this product, we’re helping Australians stay connected and productive whether they’re travelling within Australia, outdoors or working remotely.”

Tangerine’s 5G mobile broadband plan: what’s included

The portable Tangerine 5G mobile broadband plan is priced at $64.90 per month, but comes with a $5 per month discount for your first six months (bringing the cost down to $59.90). You can find the plan in the table below.

Tangerine’s month-to-month plan comes with 400GB of data, but there is a slight catch: your download speeds are capped at 250Mbps. However, this is more than fast enough for just about anything you’d need internet access for, such as high-definition and 4K streaming, intense gaming, and fast downloads.

Where 5G coverage isn’t accessible, the plan offers typical 4G download speeds of up to 180Mbps, and 3G download speeds of up to 20Mbps. Upload speeds on 5G and 4G networks are typically between 1 and 40Mbps, or 300Kbps to 3Mbps if using 3G.

Tangerine’s 5G mobile broadband plan is SIM-only, but can be used in a compatible 5G-ready device or tablet. Tangerine gives customers a choice of two optional 5G modems at checkout, including the $599 Inseego 5G WiFi M2000 and the $649 Inseego 5G Indoor Router FX2000.

Aside from 5G broadband, Tangerine also offers a range of low-cost NBN plans across several speed tiers. If you’re looking for a household internet solution, rather than a product for travel or to use away from home, you may be better suited to an unlimited data NBN plan if available.

The below table shows a range of unlimited Tangerine NBN plans as published on Canstar Blue’s database, listed in order of standard monthly cost, from lowest to highest. Is Tangerine your best 5G internet option?

If you’re looking for a mobile broadband plan with 5G coverage and a generous chunk of monthly data, Tangerine’s pricing is highly competitive. It comes in cheaper than fellow Telstra network operator Belong’s biggest 4G and 5G data-only SIM plan, which is priced at $70 per month.

Belong’s $70 plan comes with 400GB of data — equal to Tangerine’s option — and like Tangerine, download speeds are capped at 250Mbps. Belong also offers 5G coverage on its 20GB and 100GB data SIMs, but both of these plans come with download speed limits of 100Mbps.

Telstra includes 5G coverage across all three of its mobile broadband plans, with no download speed restrictions. Its Large plan also includes 400GB of data each month, but is priced at a comparatively expensive $80.

Optus’ sole data-only mobile broadband plan also features access to its 5G network, but only comes with 20GB of data each month (albeit it with a low $20 price tag).

Mobile broadband and data-only SIM plans are great options for customers who want fast and reliable coverage when away from a home WiFi connection, or for use in tablets and mobile hotspots. But if you’re considering 5G as an NBN replacement, 5G home wireless broadband — also known as 5G home internet — may be a better option.

5G home internet plans usually include unlimited data, and are designed to be used as a full-time residential internet connection. There’s 5G options available from a number of major telcos, including Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, and TPG, although some do come with download speed caps. However, if you’re interested in seeing what’s on offer, we’ve compiled a selection of popular 5G home internet plans below.

The following table shows selected published 5G home internet plans on Canstar Blue’s database, listed in order of cost, from the lowest to highest and then by data allowance, largest to smallest.
