It might not be one of the biggest names in Australia’s appliance market, but the Whirlpool Corporation appears to have established a decent industry foothold in regards to its microwaves, with the company doing reasonably well in Canstar Blue’s 2015 microwave comparison report. Whirlpool microwaves received four stars for overall satisfaction, functionality, and ease of cleaning, and three stars for the other four criteria.
A brief history of the company
Whirlpool was founded in 1911 as the Upton Machine Company by brothers Louis and Fred Upton, with the help of their uncle Emory. The company began producing washing machines, but by the 50s the company was producing other appliances such as air conditioners and cooking ranges. The company was renamed as the Whirlpool Corporation in 1950, and after a number of subsequent name changes, returned to being named Whirlpool in 1966.
In 1967 a company owned by Whirlpool developed the first commercial countertop microwave meant for consumer use, the Radarange.
Since then the company has expanded both its range of products and its international presence, has landed a spot in the Fortune 500, and is “the largest home appliance maker in the world”. In 2004 the company notably became the first major appliance manufacturer to receive a 100% rating on the Corporate Equality Index, and has received a perfect score eleven years running.
What our survey respondents say…
Earlier in 2015 Canstar Blue surveyed just over 1,000 people who had bought a new microwave in the last 3 years. These are some of the comments, among others, made by survey respondents who had purchased a Whirlpool microwave.
|I can make crispy chips in the microwave and warm pies and the pastry stays crisp||Doesn’t stop completely when cycle has finished|
|Less electricity consumption and cooks faster||Still learning the different functions|
|It is easy to use. Has multiple functions.||Learning to use it is hard|
|Easy to use fan stays on when cycle finished to prevent condensation inside||I find it confusing and I don’t use it properly. I could have bought a cheap microwave.|
