* Overall satisfaction is an individual rating and not a combined total of all ratings. By default, brands with equal overall satisfaction ratings are sorted by the mean overall satisfaction score as rated by consumers. You can click the arrows at the top of any column in the table to sort by the results in that column. Canstar Blue research finalised in April 2022, published in April 2022.
Aussies have rated Dairy Farmers best in Canstar Blue’s sour cream ratings, scoring the brand five-star reviews for taste, texture and consistency, packaging design, range variety and overall satisfaction.
Dairy Farmers creams the competition in sour cream ratings
Sour cream is one of those magical foods that can transcend the boundaries of flavour, becoming a centerpiece in many sweet and savoury dishes. Maybe you pile your potato skins high with the stuff or mix it with a little brown sugar to give summer berries an extra kick – whichever way you cream it, Aussies love the stuff. In fact, over a third of shoppers we surveyed buy sour cream as part of their regular grocery shop (35%), and roughly the same portion are happy to purchase the cheapest brand as long as they get their serve (30%). It’s all about flavour when it comes to sour cream, with only 13% of shoppers worrying about calories, and less than 12% concerned with health star ratings. So, cream may rise to the top, but is there a brand of sour cream that tops all others?
To find out, we’ve asked more than 300 shoppers for their feedback about the sour cream brands they’ve recently bought and consumed. Respondents scored brands on taste, texture and consistency, value for money, packaging design, range variety, and overall satisfaction. Those that met the minimum sample size (30 responses) are included in our report.
In our first-ever sour cream review, Dairy Farmers was the cat that got the cream after receiving five-star reviews in most categories – including overall satisfaction!
Best Sour Cream Brands
Here are the best brands of sour cream in Australia, as rated by consumers in Canstar Blue’s review:
There was nothing sour about Dairy Farmers’ win after it received five-star reviews for taste, texture and consistency, packaging design, variety, and overall satisfaction. Top Sour Cream Brand – Dairy Farmers
Dairy Farmers has been in the milk and other dairy products business since 1900, making it one of Australia’s oldest dairy producers. The brand’s product line-up includes milk, yoghurt, buttermilk, custard, butter, and of course, cream. Its sour cream range offers regular flavours and lite options, for those who opt for a lower fat percentage.
Dairy Farmers received five stars for taste, texture and consistency, packaging design, range variety, and overall satisfaction. It received three stars for value for money.
Is sour cream healthy?
Regular sour cream contains pretty high levels of fat and calories, which means it’s best to eat it in moderation. Consider it as an occasional garnish or topping to your meals, rather than a fundamental ingredient. The recommended serving size for most sour creams is about two tablespoons.
What do you use sour cream for?
You might be surprised to hear that sour cream has excellent uses beyond nachos! Because of its full fat profile, it lends a creaminess to any soup or stew it’s added to, and at the same time, can make baked goods rich and crumbly. You can slather it on sandwiches, add it to salads and even throw in some herbs and spices to make your own dips.

Canstar Blue surveyed more than 3,000 Australian adults across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction, via ISO 26362 accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have purchased (from a supermarket or grocer) and consumed sour cream within the last three months – in this case, 356 people.
Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then by mean overall satisfaction. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
