GloBird Energy removes its low rates to new customers

An independent energy provider has removed its low rates on offer in New South Wales, south east Queensland and South Australia, despite usually being price-competitive.

The Aussie-owned retailer claims volatile wholesale market conditions have led to rate rises by up to 50-plus per cent, depending on plan and location.

New customers who sign up to GloBird Energy’s plans will pay higher prices due to an increase to the usage and supply rates – two of the main charges found in power bills.

It’s price changes like these that reinforce why it’s so important for customers in market to check the finer details of a power plan before signing up, said Canstar Blue’s Energy Editor, Jared Mullane.

“GloBird has removed its low rates available to new customers and the new rates they are advertising are much higher than the ones they were advertising only a week ago,” he said.

“Price and product movements aren’t uncommon, but recent increases to rates from retailers like GloBird could be largely driven by soaring wholesale electricity prices we’ve seen of late.”

A recent report from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) revealed that wholesale energy prices had risen by 141 per cent over the past year.

All of GloBird Energy’s products come with variable rates, meaning prices can change in the future for existing customers, so long as bill-payers are notified in advance.
