How we rate digital cameras

Our ratings compare a range of digital camera brands based on customer satisfaction, so you can find out what other Aussies think about their digital camera before you shop around. It’s like asking for recommendations from other Aussies, but all in one place!

Canstar Blue surveyed 714 Australians for their feedback on the digital camera(s) they’ve purchased in the last three years.

  • The outcomes reported in these ratings are measured via Pureprofile’s accredited online research panel.

Survey respondents are asked to rate their satisfaction with their digital camera brand from zero to 10, with zero meaning extremely dissatisfied and 10 meaning extremely satisfied. Digital camera brand satisfaction is rated on the following criteria:

  • Value for money: The price paid was reasonable compared to the quality of the digital camera.
  • Design and ergonomics: The digital camera was functional, easy to use and was convenient to transport.
  • Picture quality: Photos and/or videos taken on the camera were of good quality.
  • Memory/storage capacity: The camera was able to store a large number of photos/videos with internal storage and/or expandable storage.
  • Battery life/reliability: The included battery or batteries lasted a reasonably long time per charge and were reliable during use.

The winner is the brand Aussies rate highest for the things that matter most to customers, based on overall satisfaction. To see how we crunch the numbers, check out our methodology page.

To qualify in the ratings results, brands must have received a minimum of 30 responses to be included. Therefore, not all digital camera brands in the market will be compared in this survey. Brands rated in this survey are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.

  • Canon
  • GoPro
  • Nikon
  • Sony
  • Panasonic
  • Kodak

Top Digital Camera Brand — Canon

Canon was our award-winning brand, with users ranking it highest for both design and ergonomics and picture quality, which were two of the most important factors when it comes to choosing a digital camera brand. However Nikon scored highest for value for money, which was the most important factor for customers choosing a digital camera.

While these are only some of the digital camera brands on the market, there are plenty of other brands to choose from, offering a range of features at different price points. Comparing a wide range of camera brands might help you choose the best digital camera for your needs.

More than half (58%) of respondents had researched camera brands before purchasing, while 15% wished they had purchased a better camera. The average price paid for a digital camera was around $688, and while 38% had purchased their camera on sale, 12% chose to purchase the cheapest digital camera available.
