GloBird Energy lands in NSW promising strong bang for buck

There’s a welcome boost to power price competition in New South Wales, with Victorian upstart GloBird Energy making the move north with a new budget offer.

Promising “unbeatable rates for gas and electricity”, GloBird Energy has been taking on the big energy players in Victoria for a few years, but is now offering NSW households one of the cheapest deals in town, with up to 20% off the Reference Price at the time of writing.

For founder John McCluskey, flying the nest into NSW is a significant step forward for GloBird Energy, and something he’s wanted to do for some time.

He said: “We get calls from NSW quite often asking if we can quote rates, and we’re delighted to finally be able to say yes.

“We’ve been wanting and planning on retailing in NSW for a long time now, but for the last five years we’ve focused solely on Victoria. We gave ourselves a target of being ready to go live in the new year of 2020, and are delighted to say we’ve made it, just.

“We want to provide NSW customers the same kind of strong bang for buck offers we’re known for in Victoria. This is our first move into other states, so it’s a massive milestone for us.”

GloBird Energy super hero

Known for a focus on cheap prices, GloBird Energy has launched two plans in NSW, with its EasySave offer instantly one of the cheapest around.

OVO Energy also arrives in NSW

GloBird Energy isn’t the only retailer to launch in NSW this month, with OVO Energy also setting up shop in the state. In its first move into the Australian market, the renewable energy-focused British retailer is offering a plan that sits a reasonable 15% below the Reference Price at the time of writing.

OVO Energy is different to most Australian retailers in that it operates a bill smoothing model that sees customers pay the same amount each billing period, in theory making it easier to budget. The company does this by estimating a household’s typical energy usage based on previous data. Should you not use as much power as expected and end up in credit, OVO Energy even pays interest on the balance.

Why you need to take smaller energy retailers seriously

With GloBird Energy and OVO Energy launching in NSW, it takes the number of residential retailers in the state to 30. While the majority of households are still with Australia’s big three power providers – AGL, Origin and EnergyAustralia – most of the cheapest deals for NSW on Canstar Blue’s database come from smaller retailers, including the likes of ReAmped Energy, Simply Energy and Powerclub at the time of publication.
