How we rate fresh pizza
Does the idea of having another rotisserie chicken for dinner seem a little… ‘fowl’? Then it could be worth browsing through your local supermarket’s other quick eat options. Similar to frozen pizzas, you can find a few fresh pizzas in supermarkets that can easily be heated up at home for an easy, budget-friendly meal. To see which supermarket has the ‘supreme’ range of fresh pizzas, we compared the best brands on the shelf.
Canstar Blue surveyed 996 Australians for their feedback on the fresh pizza they have purchased and consumed in the last six months. Note: this only refers to fresh pizza purchased from a supermarket, and excludes frozen pizzas from the freezer section.
- The outcomes reported in these ratings are measured via accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics.
Respondents rate their satisfaction with their fresh pizza brand(s) from zero to ten, where zero is extremely dissatisfied and ten is extremely satisfied. Brand satisfaction was rated by respondents on the following criteria:
- Overall satisfaction: measures consumer satisfaction with a fresh pizza brand as an individual score NOT a combined total of all criteria.
- Taste: the pizza tasted fresh and authentic, and was true to the flavour description.
- Freshness: the pizza was in date, looked fresh, and the ingredients were flavourful.
- Value for money: the price of the pizza was reasonable given the quality of the ingredients and the quantity per serving.
- Variety & range: there were a variety of flavours, sizes and dietary accommodations (i.e. gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian etc) within the pizza brand range.
- Packaging convenience: the pizza packaging was easy to open and store to keep pizza fresh.
The winning brand is the one that receives the highest Overall satisfaction rating once all the scores from the Overall satisfaction criteria are combined and averaged.
- Overall satisfaction is asked as a specific question and represents an individual measure, not a combined total of all criteria.
- When we cannot determine a clear winner from the criteria for the Overall satisfaction rating, we will then look at the other criteria measured in the rating.
- The brand with the highest number of five-star ratings within the supporting criteria will become the five-star recipient in overall satisfaction, and thus win the award. If a clear leader still cannot be determined from the supporting criteria, joint winners will be declared.
Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included, so not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The brands rated in this survey are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.
1. Coles Kitchen
2. Coles
3. Woolworths
4. C’est Pret (IGA)

Some flavours available are pumpkin and feta, BBQ chicken & bacon, loaded supreme and double pepperoni. All pizzas can be prepared in the oven or air fryer, and promise to be hot and ready to eat in 12 minutes. The Coles Kitchen pizza range can be purchased exclusively from Coles, for around $5.50 per pizza.
- Coles Kitchen pizza impressed Aussie consumers, earning itself a piping hot win across the board. The brand received five stars for taste, freshness, value for money, variety & range, packaging convenience and overall satisfaction.
Is fresh pizza better than frozen?
Fresh pizza is generally healthier than frozen pizza because it’s made with fresh ingredients. Frozen products are usually highly processed and contain artificial preservatives, added sugars and unhealthy fats. However, there are some products at the supermarket that claim to be on the less naughty side, such as FroPro’s protein pizzas.
What’s the best crust and sauce for pizza?
You can’t beat classic tomato sauce on pizza, according to 63% of our survey respondents. Barbecue (26%) was the next most popular option, although still way ahead of pesto (5%) and alfredo (4%).
Regular crust (34%) and thin crust (31%) were the favourites in terms of crust preferences, while cheese-filled (15%) and deep dish (13%) placed behind. Cauliflower crust even popped up as a potential contender, but won over just 1% of those surveyed.
