Optus has long been a major telecommunications player in Australia, providing an extensive suite of products and services for both residential and business customers, ranging from the home through to mobile offerings.

Optus can trace its origins back to the formation of AUSSAT, which was established by the Australian government in 1981 to own and operate the national satellite system. Acquiring AUSSAT in 1992, Optus became Australia’s first privately owned communications carrier. In 2001, Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel) completed the acquisition of Cable & Wireless Optus, with Singtel Australia now holding 100 per cent of the ordinary shares in Optus.

Optus’ suite of services encompass home phone, home internet (NBN and broadband), mobile internet and mobile phones, with its home and mobile services often combining a number of different services under the one package.

Home internet and phone

Optus offers both NBN and broadband plans for residential consumers, with consumers able to check via the Optus website as to whether they are eligible for the NBN at their address as it rolls out across the country.

When it comes to its home internet offerings, Optus offers unlimited data across its various plans, with customers having their choice of bundles paired up with different inclusions, from a variety of call inclusions to entertainment offerings.

Optus states of its home broadband bundles, variously available on either month-to-month or 24-month contracts: “NBN. ADSL. Cable. We’ve got the goods. Mobile services

Optus covers all the major bases when it comes to mobile plans, from prepaid to postpaid, new phone plans, SIM-only plans and mobile broadband, comprising a variety of call, text and data allowances.

Customers also have their choice of a variety of value packs via which they can add to their plan allowances, providing options from international calls to additional data. As part of its mobile plan offerings, Optus ranges the latest smartphones, paired with various plans, available over a contract period, with its SIM-only plans (available as either a month-to-month or 12-month contract) providing consumers a bring-your-own phone option.

Optus prepaid options, meanwhile, provide the flexibility of no lock-in contract, with consumers able to buy a SIM, and to either bring their own phone or buy a phone from Optus.

Account management services

Optus offers various account management tools across its respective home and mobile plans, with customers able to access the Optus My Account service via Optus’ website.
My Account allows customers to access and manage their account at their own discretion, providing a range of services, including: viewing and paying of bills, setting up direct debit, keeping track of usage and managing call settings. Customers also have access to various functions via the Optus website for which logging into My Account is not required, such as paying their bill and recharging their prepaid service.
Along with My Account, Optus also provides its My Optus app for prepaid and postpaid mobile customers. “The My Optus app is the easiest way to manage your mobile account on the go,” Optus states. “You can track your data usage, mobile spend, set up roaming, pay bills and lots more anytime, anywhere.”

Consumers looking for help can access a range of information via the Optus website via its support pages, with Optus’ “people-powered” Yes Crowd support community also providing a forum to search for information, engage in discussion and ask questions.
Consumers can also contact Optus directly via phone, while users of the My Optus app can contact Optus about their mobile service via the app’s Live Chat function. Also maintaining a presence on social media, Optus can be contacted via Facebook and Twitter.
