Saving the day with fuel discount loyalty programs

Saving the day with fuel discount loyalty programsMore than 1 in 3 Canstar Blue survey respondents say they always fill up at the same service station. With the price of fuel set to stay high in 2015, it makes sense to sign up for a rewards program and make the most of our loyalty to our local servo.

How to spend less on fuel

Investigations by the ACCC in 2013-2014 showed that fuel savings were a proven driver for where someone would shop and buy petrol.

We all know about earning points towards travel or groceries with Flybuys and Qantas and Velocity Frequent Flyer points, but what’s out there to save you money on your tank of fuel?

Supermarket savings

Coles Express offers 4c off a litre on fuel when you spend $30 or more at Coles, BiLo or Liquorland. With over 650 Coles Express stations in Australia, you probably have one near you. They are also a Flybuys partner.

Everyday Rewards is the Woolworths equivalent. Spend $30 at Woolworths, Safeway or Big W and receive 4c a litre off fuel. Not valid with Caltex StarCards.

Service station rewards programs

United Petroleum, winner of the Canstar Blue Most Satisfied Customers award in 2015, offers the United Card, which is a rewards credit card rather than a fuel discount program. It has a $4.95 fee per month.

7-Eleven offers the 7-Eleven Fuel Card, which is another rewards credit card. It has no monthly fee but charges a 35c fee per transaction. The more fuel you buy using the card, the higher the discount you receive on your fuel purchases.

BP was the first to deliberately partner with an external reward points program, choosing Velocity Frequent Flyer.

Caltex partners with Myer One. When you earn 2,000 points you receive a $20 Myer voucher. They also offer the Caltex StarCard, another rewards credit card. It has a $3.95 monthly fee and you save 2c per litre every time you purchase fuel on the card.

Shell partners with Flybuys.

Certified Locals is the first loyalty system to include only local retail shops as its participating businesses to earn fuel discounts. The amount of the fuel discounts available changes regularly but the mission stays the same: “to help local businesses remain the heart and soul of their community”. You can use the card of the smartphone app to earn points. They themselves are 100% Aussie owned and operated.

EasyFuel offers a discount on fuel with a difference. With their program, you can even accumulate the discount until you have enough to save 20c per litre on a 50L tank of fuel. The list of places where you can earn points is long and diverse – so diverse that it might be difficult for you to remember, especially since they are all independents. If you go with them, you might want to make a list and keep it in your wallet. Watch out for that expiry date – EasyFuel discounts only last 60 days.

Ritchies Fuel Offer is an Australia only program that offers 4c per litre off on fuel for anyone spending $25 or more at a Ritchies Supermarket. Unfortunately, not every Ritchies Supermarket participates in the program. Also, there might not be a Ritchies near you; it seems to be most popular in Victoria.

FuelCents gives you 20c per litre or more off fuel by accumulating points from shopping at more than 23 participating businesses at over 300 stores. You do need a smartphone but you don’t need to download any apps. The best part is that it’s redeemable on a big, fat fuel tank – up to 80 litres!
