About Yatango Mobile phone plans

yatango logoYatango Mobile was founded in 2012 in Sydney by Andy Taylor as the world’s first “social” telco. They have a friendly incentive scheme. First, you get $20 for you and $20 for a friend (via Facebook or email) if you refer them to Yatango Mobile and they sign up. Secondly, you can earn credit by answering members’ questions on Yatango’s online forums. In this way, the company has cut costs by handing over much of its technical support to its members.

Founder and CEO Andy Taylor said their community-based service model was a move towards a “collaborative consumption” economic model. As part of this community-based model, Yatango pledged to drop its call rates as more subscribers joined.

On top of this, Yatango’s charges are seriously cheap: calls at 11c/minute with no flagfall; texts at 9c each; and data at a low 5c/MB. Yatango will even recommend the best plan for you based on what you use each month. Their app, available on the Apple Store or Google Play, lets you track your usage and adjust your plan at any time.

Yatango Mobile features exclusively SIM-only pre-paid mobile plans on the Optus 3G and 4G networks. You can find your nearest store online. Yatango Mobile Store also sells phone handsets, tablets, gadgets including earphones, and other mobile accessories.

The only thing to note is that Yatango (Australia) Mobile Pty Ltd is one of the many telcos and ISPs who’ve received a formal warning from the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

Yatango Mobile charges a $20 refundable ‘security deposit’ when you sign up, similar to the usual SIM fee charged by other pre-paid service providers. There are 4 pre-paid, SIM-only plans available:

  1. Personalised: You can create your own personalised plan using their amazing sliding scale, so you can mix and match features and only pre-pay for what you know you’ll actually use.
  2. Pay As You Go: Only pay for what you use, charged at Yatango’s standard low rates.
  3. Unlimited: $23.90/month gets you unlimited calls and texts. You can add a data add-on pack ($6 for the first GB) or international mobile pack ($5 for the first 50 minutes).
  4. Data Only: You can get a data add-on pack for your plan for as little as $5/month for 200MB, up to $69/month for 10GB. For the purposes of comparison, 1GB costs $11/month, which is around the $10 average.
