Origin Energy bumps up electricity and gas discounts

Australia’s biggest energy provider has livened up two of its electricity and gas plans, increasing the discounts across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia, with yearly savings of up to $79 on offer.

Not only has Origin Energy been busy inflating discounts, it’s also scrapped one of its plans to make way for its online version, promising even greater savings provided customers sign up online and pay by direct debit.

Origin’s ‘Flexi’ product now has a slightly higher guaranteed discount, while the ‘Max Saver – Online Special’ replaces its predecessor, the ‘Max Saver’ – a plan which didn’t require online criteria to be satisfied.

These changes come at a time where the ‘big three’ energy providers – Origin included – have been fighting to maintain their market share, which has gradually been chipped away by smaller retailers.

“It’s a great sign for competition when you see the big guys like Origin reduce pricing, particularly as many retailers have shied away from discounts since regulatory changes were introduced in mid-2019,” Canstar Blue Editor-in-Chief, Simon Downes said.

“Customers in the eastern states have been spoilt for choice of late, as more providers enter the market and existing retailers continually adjust their products. Origin’s latest overhaul could be a reaction to the increased competition and ultimately another good opportunity for consumers to take advantage of it.”

Origin Energy’s most notable price change was for natural gas in Victoria, with the Max Saver – Online Special’s discount jumping from 12% to 20%. This works out to be a saving of $79 a year based on the estimated gas usage of a Victorian household as per our calculations.
