QEnergy Review and Rates

QEnergy is an electricity retailer operating across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. While it has traditionally been focused on business energy solutions, it now also offers a comprehensive range of residential electricity products, with a particular focus on contracted plans.

Based in Brisbane, QEnergy places an emphasis on customer service, offering personal account managers – who can be reached via a personal phone number or email address – and “down to earth, ongoing advice”. It also promises to offer a no-obligation analysis of your home electricity costs.

In this review, Canstar Blue explores QEnergy’s electricity plans across the country and provides estimates as to what you can expect to pay with this small retailer.

What’s on offer from QEnergy?

QEnergy previously had a range of different residential electricity products across QLD, NSW, VIC and SA, detailed below. However, recent changes mean it now only offers a market contract in SE QLD. In other states, it only offers standard contracts. See below for pricing details.

QEnergy Residential Products

  • Flexi Home: This is QEnergy’s newest product and is also the only one to offer a discount. Customers in New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia receive a guaranteed discount of between 17% and 24% on both usage and supply charges. Victorians on the Flexi Home deal receive a larger discount of 38%, however this will only apply to usage charges. This is a two year variable rate contract with no exit fees for early termination.
  • Freedom Home: Customers on this plan have their rates locked for a contract period of 12 to 24 months. By fixing its rates, QEnergy says customers can protect their savings amidst rising power prices. This deal also comes with a personal account manager and a no-obligation analysis of your electricity costs. Freedom Home customers are billed monthly which QEnergy says helps avoid massive quarterly bill shock. This product is only available in NSW, VIC and QLD and exit fees may apply for terminating early.
  • Home Discounter: Despite the name, this deal doesn’t include a discount. The only notable difference between this product and the Freedom Home plan is that this one has quarterly payments, rather than monthly smoothed bills.
  • Market Rate Home Offer: This is a very straightforward product with no discounts, contracts or commitments. Like all other QEnergy products, it also comes with a personal account manager with a direct-access phone number and email address.

As you will find below, the Flexi Home is the real heavy-hitter in QEnergy’s product range. The retailer also rewards customers on other products that lock in for two years with cheaper prices, possibly making it a  good way to save on power in the long run.

Is QEnergy right for me?

Traditionally an electricity retailer for businesses, QEnergy is now a serious player in the residential market, especially if you live in NSW or QLD. Its market offer contracts may seem a little confusing at first, but once you realise how they work, it’s easy to determine which product could best suit your specific needs. The Flexi Home deal is one of the best value products in most states, but QEnergy’s other deals could help you save as well by protecting against rising power prices.

With a focus on personalised customer service, QEnergy has a lot to live up to, which perhaps makes locking in for a couple of years something of a gamble. However, with reasonably competitive prices in NSW and QLD, there seem to be more positives than negatives to this small retailer trying to make it big in the residential space.
