Most Satisfied Customers | Woolworths

Of all the different ice creams available, Woolworths branded ice cream tubs have been rated highest overall by Aussie consumers. Woolworths earned five stars on taste, packaging and overall ice cream goodness.

Woolworths rated No.1 for ice cream tubs

Who loves ice cream? That’s right, everyone. Well, maybe everyone except those who are dairy intolerant. Ice cream is the go-to food for so many occasions – we eat it when we celebrate and we eat it when we drown our sorrows. Throw in some jelly and you’ll be having a real party for the ages! So, Canstar Blue thought it was about time to find out which ice cream brand is rated highest by frozen treat loving Aussies right across the country.

To do this, we surveyed more than 1,600 consumers who have bought and eaten ice cream in the last three months – in this instance we are talking about the ice cream tubs you find in your local supermarket or convenience store, as opposed to the individual ice creams you’ll buy and eat at the beach.

We asked respondents to rate the brand of ice cream they most recently bought and enjoyed (or otherwise) based on:

  • Packaging – is the container easy to open up and close?
  • Taste – naturally we wanted to know how good the ice cream tastes!
  • Variety/range – does the brand have other different flavour to pick from?
  • Value for money – did the price and quality of the product represent good value?
  • Overall satisfaction – did it really hit the spot, or leave you a little underwhelmed?

Ten different brands achieved the minimum sample size required to feature in the results. They include all the big names you usually think of when it comes to ice cream – Streets, Peters, Ben & Jerry’s, Bulla, Sara Lee and Cadbury, as well as private label brands from supermarket chains Coles, Woolworths and ALDI.

As you can see from the ratings table above, it was indeed one of the supermarket brands that came out on top for taste and overall satisfaction. ‘Woolworths’ is the premium private label range from Woolies following a recent restructure of its own brand products. Woolworths still sells the cheaper ‘Homebrand’ range of products, with Homebrand ice cream featuring further down the ratings on three stars for taste and overall satisfaction. It was also three stars apiece for Coles and ALDI, as well as Ben & Jerry’s and Sara Lee. Bulla, Streets, Peters and Cadbury all rated four stars overall, though five of the ten brands scored top marks for taste.

Interestingly, only Woolworths Homebrand received a rating of five stars on value for money. We may love ice cream, but it seems we’re also quite hard to please!

Australia’s favourite ice cream flavour

Take a walk down the freezer section of your local supermarket and you’ll find lots of different ice cream flavours to pick from. Some brands – such as Ben & Jerry’s – are particularly creative with their flavours. Cookies and Cream anyone? But when it comes to your ‘standard’ flavours, which are the most popular? Our survey identified a clear winner – and you may be surprised.

  • Vanilla: 42%
  • Chocolate: 23%
  • Neapolitan: 8%
  • Mint: 7%
  • Strawberry: 5%
  • Banana: 2%
  • Other: 12%

So the vanilla fans have it. But if you’re a little tired of the same old flavours, you could always try making your own ice cream and experimenting.

Canstar Blue commissioned Colmar Brunton to survey 3,000 Australian adults across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have bought and eaten from a tub of ice cream in the last three months – in this case, 1,658 people.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
