Wholemeal bread may not be quite as popular as white or multigrain, but a significant 553 out of 3,000 survey respondents have bought it in the last three months. As you can see, most of the seven brands in the ratings table scored highly in at least one area – be it taste, texture, freshness or value for money. However, only ALDI Bakers Life achieved a five-star rating in the most important column of all, overall customer satisfaction. The result makes it a double win for the discount supermarket chain, having also taken top spot in the white bread ratings.

While consumers who buy white bread are more likely to pay attention to price, and those who choose multigrain focus more on ingredients, the survey found that people who buy wholemeal are most likely to care about brand – 38% compared to wholegrain (35%) and white (30%). The cost of wholemeal bread tends to be about the same as white bread, with Coles currently listing the price of both 700g options at $2.

Canstar Blue commissioned Colmar Brunton to survey 3,000 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have purchased either wholemeal bread from a supermarket or grocer in the last three months – in this case, 553 people.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
