We found that First National Real Estate has been impressing more than any other firm, taking out five-star reviews from consumers in almost every single category, including communication and advice, problem resolution and value for money.

Buying or selling a home will be amongst the biggest financial decisions you will ever make, so you’ll want the best service, advice and value for money from your real estate agent as possible. Really, picking the right agent to guide you through the process should be one of your first and most important considerations. So, which real estate agents are moving Aussies in the right direction, and which should be packing their bags?

To find out which real estate agents are rated highest across Australia, we surveyed more than 1,100 adults who have employed the services of an agent in their area over the last three years, whether it related to the buying or selling of a property, lease management or renting. They may not always be top of your Christmas card list, but estate agents are there to provide a vital service, whatever the specific needs. Our ratings take all aspects into account and give you an overall guide to which are meeting the expectations of customers.

In this, the inaugural year of our ratings for real estate agents, we found that First National Real Estate has been impressing more than any other firm, taking out five-star reviews from consumers in almost every single category, including communication and advice, problem resolution and value for money. In fact, no other real estate agent achieved top marks in any area.

Six of the biggest real estate agents in Australia were reviewed by their customers, so let’s dig into the detail and see which rated well in which areas. Depending on what service you require from a real estate agent, not all of these variables will be relevant to you, but they will still offer a general guide as to how other consumers rate these agents.

Communication and advice

You can only make the best financial decisions when you have all of the facts at hand, and you’ll only have all of the facts if you agent does their job properly and keeps you in the loop. It seems like such a simple thing but it’s often the simple things that go wrong. Whether you’re buying a home, selling, leasing or renting, the least you should be able to expect from your real estate agent is good communications and sound advice, not when it suits them, but when it suits you. Time is the true test of a real estate agent’s credentials in this area – it’s easy to be there when the contracts need signing, but are they still as easy to reach a couple of weeks later when you have some concerns to raise? Only First National Real Estate achieved a five-star rating in the area of communication and advice, followed by Century 21 on four stars. Harcourts, Ray White, LJ Hooker and Raine & Horne scored three stars.

Problem resolution

You can learn a lot about someone when you see how they react under pressure. Problems are simply unavoidable in the fast-moving world of real estate, whether it’s a buyer pulling out of a deal, or unruly tenants forgoing on their rent – estate agents are in the thick of it on an almost daily basis. First National Real Estate achieved a five-star rating from its customers in the area of problem resolution. Century 21 and Harcourts both earned four stars, and it was three stars for Ray White, LJ Hooker and Raine & Horne.

Value for money

If you want great service and advice, you’ll obviously have to pay for it. This rating is not a comparison of who provides the cheapest real estate services, but instead who offers the best overall value for your money! First National Real Estate was the only firm to receive a five-star rating in this area, with Century 21 and Harcourts both scoring four stars. Ray White, LJ Hooker and Raine & Horne received three stars.

Marketing (accuracy and effectiveness)

You can only sell your home or find a new tenant if you’re estate agent is able to successfully get the message out there. Marketing is a crucial aspect of these particular services, so you’ll need your agent to put their money where their mouth is. Once again, First National Real Estate was deemed top of the marketing tree, followed by Century 21 and LJ Hooker on four stars. Harcourts, Ray White and Raine & Horne rated three stars.

Moving services

Getting you in your new home is one thing, but how about all of the essential services you’ll need, like electricity and broadband? Estate agents commonly help movers set up these types of services, taking away some of the stress that comes with the territory. First National Real Estate rated four stars in this area along with Century 21. Three stars went to Raine & Horne, Harcourts, Ray White and LJ Hooker.

Contract handling

No deal is done until you sign on the dotted line. Taking care of the contracts associated with your sale or tenancy is arguably the most important thing a real estate agent has to do – mistakes are not an option. This involves communicating the finer details to all parties concerned and ensuring everyone is happy before proceeding. First National Real Estate rated five stars for contract handling, ahead of Century 21 and Ray White on four stars. It was three stars for Raine & Horne, Harcourts and LJ Hooker.

Frequently asked questions

Canstar Blue commissioned Colmar Brunton to survey 3,000 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have used the services of a real estate agent in the last three years – in this case, 1,125 people.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
