Good gear and gourmet dining make for great camping

Most Satisfied Customers Outdoor Equipment Stores 2012
Our recent research has shown that campers ensure they have the best equipment for their outdoor adventures by inspecting potential gear in store instead of shopping online.

While 92% of survey respondents were happy to inspect and buy their new gear in store, that doesn’t mean they were happy to pay full price for it. Three quarters of Australians told us they would usually wait for a sale before buying camping equipment.

On a different note, the concept of ‘roughing it’ in the wild was foreign to the 60% of respondents who enjoyed a more ‘gourmet’ camping experience by bringing good wine and food on their trip. A similar number of respondents admitted to bringing all the modern comforts of home with them when they set out on a camping trip.

Happy campers should take note of our award winner for outdoor equipment stores, with Ray’s Outdoors having the most satisfied customers out of several rated brands for this category. They received five stars for nearly all of our rated criteria, and withstood sturdy competition from BCF, Anaconda and Kathmandu.

Hot on the heels of Ray’s Outdoors were:

  • Anaconda, who received five stars for their range of products and their specials, and
  • BCF, with five star ratings for their range of products and brands

Our results also showed that many Australians prefer to camp in groups, with three quarters of respondents stating they did not enjoy camping alone. We also found that 68% of Generation Y’s would rather camp with their friends than their families, compared to 26% of Baby Boomers.

We also found that men were more likely than women (53% versus 43%) to get back to nature and camp more than twice a year.

Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton to regularly survey 2,500 Australian consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from outdoor equipment store customers within the survey group – in this case, 546 people. To qualify, the customer must have purchased an item from a bricks and mortar outdoor equipment store in the last 12 months. Brands must receive at least 30 responses to be included.

Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands that received three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10.
