Australia’s favourite takeaway food, and how much we pay for it

Pizza: A Family FavouriteAustralians love good food, but there’s not always time in the day to cook it. If you don’t feel like cooking after a long day at work, you’re not alone. We found that two in five respondents to our recent survey order takeaway food once a week. An additional two in five do so once a month.

The big question, however, is what are they eating? We asked our survey respondents what they most frequently order as takeaway.

Without further ado, this is what we found:

Fish and chips

American (e.g. burgers)

Regardless of demographic (e.g. where people live, how old they are, and which gender they are), the results consistently show that pizza is the go-to takeaway option for more Australians.

Interestingly, this sentiment was echoed by students surveyed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2012, a quarter of whom considered pizza their favourite takeaway option.

How much do Australians spend on an average takeaway pizza order?

Twenty three percent of our respondents report they don’t care where they buy their pizza from, so long as it’s the cheapest. That still leaves a majority of Australians who aren’t so concerned with price. Therefore, we tried to find out how much these customers are paying for their pizza on average.

According to the takeaway spend recorded in these results, we spend an average of $31.10 per pizza order. At most stores, this will buy you two pizzas and some sides. All in all, that’s pretty great value considering you barely have to lift a finger to get your dinner delivered to your door.
