JB Hi-Fi launches SIM-only mobile phone plans

Watch out Woolworths, ALDI and Coles: home entertainment mega-chain JB Hi-Fi has thrown its hat into the ‘retailers launching phone plans’ ring.

The company has very quietly launched JB Hi-Fi Mobile, a small range of SIM-only mobile phone plans that are available exclusively in stores. The new service will run on Telstra’s 3G and 4G networks, with two plans confirmed as available so far:

  • 12-month $45 BYO Plan: Unlimited standard talk and text within Australia, plus 25GB data (including 10GB bonus data)
  • 24-month $65 BYO Plan: Unlimited standard talk and text within Australia, plus 45GB data (including 5GB bonus data)

Each new plan will include free use of the Telstra Air Wi-Fi hotspots Australia-wide, and data-free music streaming from Apple Music. Both of these offers are also available on Telstra plans, but have generally not been passed on to smaller operators using Telstra’s network (with the exception of Boost Mobile).

Bonus phone discounts: save up to $500

In addition to great data inclusions and unlimited talk and texting, both phone plans come with some exclusive JB Hi-Fi bonuses. Customers on the $45 plan will receive a free $200 JB Hi-Fi gift card, while the larger 45GB option includes some serious discounts on a brand new device.

Sign up for the $65 plan, and you can choose between a $300 discount on any new smartphone priced at under $999, or a $500 discount on phones over $999. As JB Hi-Fi’s plans are bring-your-own-phone (BYO) only, this plan is a great way to score a deal on a new handset, particularly in-demand premium devices.

If you’re looking at the just-released 256 GB iPhone XS – normally $1,879 upfront – you could own it for a relatively-cheap $1,379, when you cash in the $500 discount from JB Hi-Fi’s $65 plan. The same $500 saving gets you the iPhone XS Max from $1,549 outright, or the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 from $999.

Customers who’d prefer something under $999 can save $300 on the 64GB iPhone 8, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, the OPPO R15 Pro, or more than 60 other devices at various price points. However, be aware that the $65 plan does mean you’re committing to a 24-month contract; if that seems too long, the $45 plan is available for 12 months, and its $200 gift card can be put towards any device available from JB Hi-Fi.
