Origin to slash $100 off for new customers who stay loyal until July 1

Households looking to stick with an electricity provider for the long haul may want to divert their attention to Origin Energy and its latest switching promotion

The utilities giant is currently serving up $100 in bill credit to new electricity customers in New South Wales, south-east Queensland, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory who stay loyal to the provider beyond the energy market’s biggest annual price change event: July 1.

July 1 is traditionally the date that default power prices change across NSW, Victoria, SEQ, SA and the ACT. In Victoria, this is referred to as the Victorian Default Offer (VDO) whilst in the other aforementioned states and territories, this is considered as the reference price

This coming July 1 is anticipated to bring increases of up to 31% for default power prices across NSW, VIC, SEQ and SA.

Origin’s credit is currently applicable to new sign-ups on its Go Variable and Everyday Rewards Variable electricity offers in NSW, SEQ, SA and the ACT and will be paid as a one-off credit on customers’ first bill after July 1.

Both these offers come with variable rates over a 12-month benefit period with no lock-in contracts. Everyday Rewards Variable however, comes with the added bonus of a one-off payment of 5,000 Everyday Rewards points for eligible Everyday Rewards Members. These customers will also continue to earn an additional point for every $1 paid on their bills for the duration of the plan.

For the full terms and conditions surrounding Origin’s credit it is best to visit the Origin Energy website for more information.

This offer isn’t currently available to Victorians or natural gas only customers.

Is waiting for Origin’s electricity credit worth it?

While the above prices do look quite attractive for Origin’s electricity plans, it is important to remember that the bill credit on offer won’t be available to customers for at least another two months.

Canstar Blue Utilities Editor Tara Donnelly said the credit then would be better suited to those that hoped to reduce incoming July 1 bill shock.

“While the plans in question from Origin won’t be directly impacted as a result of July 1 since they are market offers, there could still be some slight movements ahead, as with any other power plan,” she said. “This is because most retailers also use this as an opportunity to adjust pricing across their whole product line-up.

“As such, Origin’s credit could be useful for customers who are looking to avoid bill shock as a result of July 1 power price changes,” she said.

However, Ms Donnelly cautioned households of comparing plans on sign-up incentives alone.

“Bill credits and speciality offers can add great value to an electricity plan, but these shouldn’t be the only consideration when choosing the right deal for you,” she said. “Customers should also take care to compare the usage and supply rates on any offer before making a purchase decision, as these are the costs that will be impacted on a day-to-day basis by your home energy usage. All of these details can be sought in the energy fact sheet of your plan.”
