Woman looking at newspaper, shocked.

5 shocking power deals you may have missed this July 1

Whether it be from your tax agent, superannuation company or energy provider, there’s a good chance you’ve been bombarded recently with reminders about the first of July.

And while it may be all well and good to just hit ‘delete all’ on your inbox this time of year and hope for the best, those on the hunt for savvy savings may miss out on the next best thing if they aren’t eagle eyed and ready – particularly when it comes to household electricity and natural gas bills.

For those unaware, July 1 marks the change of default power prices for deregulated states in the energy market. It’s the time of year when the Reference Price (also known as the Default Market Offer) in New South Wales, south-east Queensland and South Australia, as well as the Victorian Default Offer (VDO) in Victoria experiences an increase or decrease depending on the wholesale energy market at the time.

Unfortunately, this July 1 has brought increases of up to 25% with it for default electricity prices across these locations, as well as smaller increases for Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory.

While many retailers have long been advertising expected changes, there’s still a good chance that some customers may not even realise their bills are about to skyrocket, or worse still, feel as though they have no choice but to cop a price hike on the chin.

But, that’s where Canstar Blue comes in to lend a helping hand. If you’ve fallen victim to July 1-itis, never fear! We’ve collated five of the more interesting energy deals that have cropped up post-default power price change this year, which could help to save you a buck, be it on your bills, at the bowser or on your other home utilities.

Please note, while these offers may be applicable at the time of publication, retailers are still in the process of updating their offers for the new financial year. As such, it is always a good idea to confirm plan details with the provider directly before making a purchase decision.

1. OVO Energy EV & bill credit giveaway

Starting strong is the UK-born OVO Energy, with not only competitively priced electricity plans in New South Wales, Victoria, south-east Queensland and South Australia post-July 1 changes, but also a new competition worth a whopping $61,200 in prizes.

The latest giveaway from the provider will see one lucky customer score themselves a brand-new Tesla model 3, as well as $2,000 in power bill credit and access to its The EV Plan with 100% GreenPower included.

Customers will need to get in quick though – this offer is only available until August 31, 2023. New sign-ups who don’t score the keys to the new Tesla won’t be going home empty handed though! In addition to getting a cheap variable rate plan – or fixed rate for Victorians – they’ll automatically receive a $100 bill credit from OVO Energy as part of its Welcome Credit. This will be paid on bills over 12 months.
