If you’ve been looking for an excuse to spend all summer binge-watching Netflix – and you’re in the market for a brand new smartphone or tablet – Optus’ latest streaming offer is too good to miss. For a limited time, the telco is throwing in a free 12-month Netflix subscription on selected Samsung mobile and tablet plans.
The newly-launched Optus offer is only available to customers buying or leasing the Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+, or Galaxy Note 9 on 24-month My Plan Plus or My Plan Flex plans. If you’re after a new tablet, you can also score a free year of Netflix with the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 on Optus’ 24-month data-only plans.
How to get your free year of Netflix
The free 12 months of Netflix offer is available for both new and existing customers from now through to 13 January, 2019 – so if you’ve been thinking about upgrading to a new Samsung device, you’ve now got an extra incentive to sign up for summer.
If the offer to cover your Netflix bill for a year wasn’t appealing enough, Optus currently includes data-free streaming free on 24-month mobile plans (and for $5 per month on tablet plans) – meaning a binge-watching session won’t chew through your plan’s data.
Optus’ offer covers a full free year of Netflix’s Standard Streaming Plan, which gives you access to High Definition video streaming (Standard Definition on mobile or tablet), and allows viewing on two screens simultaneously. To claim the free Netflix deal, you’ll need to sign up to an included Optus plan and Samsung device before the January cut-off, then redeem your Netflix voucher code online before 12 February 2019. You’ll receive both the code and further instructions from Optus, via email or SMS within 48 hours of purchasing an eligible plan and device.
A standard Netflix plan is normally priced at $13.99 per month, so Optus’ offer will save customers $167.88 over 12 months. Once your free year is up, you can cancel your Netflix account, or continue your plan for the full $13.99 monthly fee.
This isn’t the first time that Optus has offered free Netflix subscriptions in conjunction with certain plans, so it’s great to see the promotion return just in time for the holiday streaming season.
Should I get an Optus Samsung phone plan?
If you’ve considered getting any of these Samsung devices, and you want to keep up with the latest shows on Netflix, it’s definitely worth considering a move to Optus’ postpaid plans. The telco’s data-free streaming options are another big draw card – and with more of us using our mobile devices to stream video, you will essentially be able to subscribe to and watch Netflix for free for your first year (excluding your monthly phone bill).
If a free Netflix subscription isn’t high on your list of phone plan essentials, it’s worth comparing Samsung phone plans across all major telcos. While you can always buy the phone upfront and find a SIM-only plan separately, Telstra, Vodafone, Southern Phone and TeleChoice do offer a range of Samsung phones on plans.
The benefit of getting a phone on a plan is that you’re not paying over $1,000 upfront — plans with repayments make it much more affordable to get your hands on the latest devices. The downside, of course, is that you’re locked into a contract in order to pay off your new smartphone, so it pays to think carefully before you sign up.
