As the demand for data rises rapidly due to more Australians self-isolating and working or studying from home, Telstra is taking steps to help customers stay connected.
The telco has today confirmed it will provide both residential and business customers with additional mobile and broadband data throughout April, and will offer all eligible pensioners unlimited calls on Telstra home phone plans.
Telstra joins Optus in gifting customers bonuses to help offset some of the stress of staying home during the COVID-19 crisis. But while Optus is currently only giving eligible mobile subscribers extra data throughout April, Telstra has extended its offers to both home phone and broadband customers.
“COVID-19 is a global challenge, we are all affected, and we all need to play our part in the response.” said Telstra CEO Andy Penn in a statement.
“From Telstra’s perspective an important part of that is ensuring everyone has the tools they need to stay in touch and keep business flowing during this challenging time.”
If you’re a current Telstra customer, here’s what you can claim.
Unlimited home phone calls for pensioners
To help keep the most vulnerable in our community connected, Telstra is offering all eligible pensioners on a Telstra home phone plan unlimited standard calls from Thursday, 19 March until 30 April, 2020.
This includes local and national calls, calls to Australian mobiles, and calls to 13/1300 numbers made from your home phone in Australia.
Broadband customers: unlimited data until 30 April
Broadband plans with capped data allowances will be upgraded to unlimited data at no extra charge from Thursday, 19 March through to 30 April, 2020. This offer applies to both consumer and small business customers on eligible NBN, ADSL, and cable home broadband plans, and bonus unlimited data will be added to all plans automatically.
While unlimited data is now available on Telstra broadband plans, the telco does offer ‘Core’ plan options with 500GB of data each month. Customers on older Telstra plans may also be limited to 200GB or less, or to Telstra’s previous 1000GB monthly limit.

Mobile customers: up to 25GB bonus data
Customers on postpaid mobile plans will also receive a data bonus, both on mobile phone plans and mobile broadband. Telstra is also offering an extra 25GB of full-speed data to both consumer and small business customers with postpaid mobile plans, with bonus gigabytes available on the Telstra 24×7 and My Telstra apps from Thursday, 19 March through to 31 March, 2020. Claim your data-add on through the relevant app, and it will be applied to your account within 24 hours; once your data is live, you’ll have 30 days to use it before it expires.
If you’re a prepaid customer, you’ll be able to claim an additional of 10GB of data on active recharges of $40 or more, for use over 28-30 days (depending on your plan expiry). As with Telstra’s postpaid data offer, you can apply for bonus data through the Telstra 24×7 and My Telstra apps, and all extra gigabytes will be added to your account within 48 hours. Customers should keep in mind that bonus data does not roll over.

Mobile broadband prices dropped
Telstra is also dropping prices on its mobile broadband range, giving customers a $10 or $15 monthly credit on selected plans for a full year.
Sign on for the Small or Medium plan and you’ll receive a $10 monthly account credit for your first 12 months, saving you $120 in total. Customers on the 100GB Large plan will receive a $15 credit each month, adding up to $180 saved over 12 months.
The discount applies to all mobile broadband plans, both SIM-only and those bundled with a modem or device (including Telstra’s 5G Wi-Fi Hub). Keep in mind that you’ll still need to pay for your modem, USB dongle, or WiFi hub if you don’t opt for a SIM-only plan. This offer ends 6 April, 2020.
