* Overall satisfaction is an individual rating and not a combined total of all ratings. By default, brands with equal overall satisfaction ratings are sorted by the mean overall satisfaction score as rated by consumers. You can click the arrows at the top of any column in the table to sort by the results in that column. ^ By clicking on a brand or ‘details’ button, you will leave Canstar Blue and be taken to our referral partner to compare. You agree that Canstar Blue’s terms and conditions apply to this referral. If you click on a brand that our referral partner does not cover, you will be taken to a brand page on Canstar Blue. Canstar Blue research finalised in February 2022, published in March 2022.
Cordial may be the ‘sweet something’ to bring to any party, whether it’s a child’s birthday or a boozy night in with the gals (hello raspberry gin!). It’s also a pantry staple in many households. One in four Aussies we surveyed (26%) even say they drink cordial to help them with their water intake throughout the day, while some prefer it over soft drinks because they think it’s healthier (16%). Over a third of those surveyed (34%) similarly said they opt for sugar-free or diet alternatives.
To find out what goes down best, Canstar Blue asked more than 950 consumers for their feedback on the cordial(s) they purchased from a supermarket or grocer within the last three months. Respondents scored brands on range variety, taste, packaging design, value for money and overall satisfaction. Brands that met the minimum sample size (30 responses) are compared in our report.
In our first-ever cordial ratings, Bickford’s proved to have the winning recipe after rating best in four out of five research categories – including overall satisfaction!
Here are the best brands of cordial, as rated by Australian consumers in Canstar Blue’s survey:
Bickford’s dominated our inaugural cordial ratings, rating best with five-star reviews for overall satisfaction as well as for taste, variety and packaging design. Coles was the only other brand that scored full marks, namely for value for money.
Top Cordial Brand – Bickford’s
Bickford’s is an Australian family-owned business that has been refreshing Aussies with its variety of beverages since the late 1800s. The brand even says some of the recipes of its cordials have barely changed in 143 years. Aside from its regular cordial line-up, Bickford’s also offers diet options that contain less than 35 kilojoules of sugar per serve. There are additionally sugar-free flavours made with stevia and erythritol.
Some products from Bickford’s cordial range include:
Bickford’s Traditional Cordial – Mango Iced Tea
Bickford’s Sugar-Free Cordial – Lemon Lime
Bickford’s Diet Cordial – Lemon Lime & Bitters
Bickford’s received five-star reviews for taste, variety, packaging and overall satisfaction. The only exception was value for money, where it got four stars.
What is cordial?
Cordial is a type of flavoured syrup or concentrated tonic designed to be mixed with water before you drink it. It can also be added to soda to create a cordial soft drink or blended into cocktails and mocktails. Generally, one-part cordial is added to four parts water (or more), depending on how concentrated the product is. Many brands now also offer no added sugar and sugar-sweetened (rather than syrup) alternatives.

Canstar Blue surveyed more than 3,000 Australian adults across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction, via ISO 26362 accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have purchased and consumed cordial (i.e. a concentrated syrup that you add to water) from a supermarket or grocer within the last three months – in this case, 968 people.
Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then by mean overall satisfaction. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
